Young Veteran?

Young Veteran?

Young Veteran?

The book pays a lot of attention to the fact that the Veteran spend s long time doing what they do and wanting to retire but getting pulled in again.

What problems would arise when you play a young, let’s say Doctor or Mechanic just starting out in the supernatural world?

  1. The core conceit of the Veteran is that you aren’t new in the supernatural world; you were once a bad-ass but got old or broken.

You can still be young though: transformed from a ghoul back into a human, gave up the old life due to injuries, etc.

  3. To be fair, you could have been a badass at the top of your game and be sort of young. The Bourne series is mentioned as inspiration, and Mr. Bourne doesn’t seem that old. But a 21 year old probably doesn’t fit that mold. Not sure if it conflicts with any of the moves though as I don’t have the book in front of me.

  5. Taking a look at the actual archetype, there are a couple of things that look like they don’t fit super well with the concept of a younger person.

-Old Friends, Old Favors: Could be reskinned as having an older relative that knew the person possibly. Or perhaps something with having a really connected online social network (Paranet style?)

-Debts: You probably aren’t training anyone.

-Intro: These need some reworking in a general sense, because well, you haven’t stopped.

That said, the theme of the moves are SUPER evocative for the Veteran, but could work a little looser for a younger Mechanic dude. I’m no expert, but I bet this would work okay.

The workspace, True Artist, Invested, Too Old For This Shit (with a new name of course, maybe ‘I Didn’t Want It To Go This Way’), Best Laid Plans, Gun to a Knife Fight (major rage-out moment for the little nerd?), and most of the corruption moves work just fine as far as I can tell.

  7. If you want a quick “fix”, you could always play an Aware and ask your MC if you can start with a Workspace or select one as your first advance. Just an idea.

  9. Have to admit that at first glance at this post, I immediately thought that an archetype called “The Genius”, “The Talent”, or something could be created and would work.
