So, what playbooks are a good fit for a Ben 10/Guyver style hero whose powers come from an alien/mystic artifact they stumbled upon? More Guyver-style armour suit than Ben 10, really.

  1. Depends on their personality. You can easily do this with a bunch of playbooks. The Beacon and the Outsider (and maybe the Transformed) are the only ones that seem to push against that.

  2. Yep. The most important question is, “what sort of issues does this character have to deal with?”

Is there a legacy that comes with the artifact?

Do they need to keep their two lives separate?

Does using the powers of the artifact risk overkill?

Does using the artifact doom the world or the wielder?

    Etc.

  3. As said already, the Bull, Nova and Janus could all work depending on the specifics. If they’re not the first to use the artifact, that could be a cool way to do a non-family Legacy, or the Protege if they were given it by a mentor. If they stole the artifact, consider the Delinquent. If the artifact is dangerous to its user, they’re Doomed. If they made it themself, Iron Man style, you could make a case for the Beacon.

One of the things I love about Masks is that the playbooks aren’t really about what powers you have, but how you interact with those powers or with the superpowered world in general. For example, the Nova is presumed to have psychic powers, elemental control, magic or something like that, but they could easily also be someone with Hulk-like strength and rage.

Although it might be cool to have a playbook specifically about a hero who gets their powers from an artifact, maybe “the Wielder” or something like that.

  4. Sebastian Baker Well there are other good advances to take in the mean while.

It’s kinda inspiring me to create a character that’s actually the sentient weapon and it’s wielder is a “volunteer” from the Organization. Easy enough to role play moves like the “Virtual Assistant” to be the host regaining some semblance of consciousness in the shared body…

  5. Thanks folks! Probably won’t go with the Wielder (my GM is fairly new to running stuff, so I don’t wanna try playtesting a new playbook with her), but based on the advice given so far I think either the Legacy or the Nova would fit with what I have in mind. Janus might fit too, I just need to figure out how to link the available abilities to the concept.
