I’m currently reading the rules and looking forward to running it I think it’s got huge potential! I want the sex, drugs, parties and rock and roll to contrast starkly with social issues of the time, but that’s tricky given the language used at that time. Do you have any suggestions for addressing this or agree to soften it in advance? It seems to me you want to have a genuine experience but would have to make it clear to the players that views held by the npcs are not your own!! PS you mention articles and stories dealing with race in the 70s do you have any recommendations?

  1. I explicitly state at the beginning that slurs of any kind are not tolerated at my table. You can still have racism and sexism in action without the words. I know it’s tricky. 🙂

There’s a mediography at the end, but I’d welcome suggestions beyond that as well!

  2. We ran into something very similar in my Cthulhu game I ran last week. I came to the same conclusion as Sarah. I think that the racism and sexism is an important facet of that time period but that doesn’t mean we have to use the language. It is sufficient to say that this guy doesn’t like this other fellow because he is X. If you feel it is necessary, you can preface anything really distasteful with an OOC moment, “This dude is a racist asshole and does/says…” I don’t usually find that one necessary but it might be for something particularly egregious.
