Hey Brendan Conway, I’m about to take The Innocent out for a spin, and I noticed there’s a LOT of “Clear a Condition” moves. (Both the Team Moves, 2 of the Choose a Moves, and some of the Replace a Core Moves.) Where am I supposed to be getting all these conditions from? Can I expect less Comfort & Support from teammates in my road to destiny?

  1. Yes.

What I’m getting at is, because you can clear conditions w/ natural actions or a few of the basic moves, do you expect the Innocent to gain more than the regular # of conditions?

  2. Hey Adam! That draft of the Innocent isn’t 100% complete, but I hear what you’re saying. In the ultimate draft, there are only 4 elements of the Innocent that let you clear a condition, including the two Team moves, one Future Self replacement for a core move, and one playbook move.

Two of the Innocent’s playbook moves are powered by them choosing to mark a condition. If chosen, those moves will give them more conditions to deal with. But in general, the idea is that giving a playbook more ways to clear conditions isn’t a bad thing if those methods guide the playbook towards its issues. So it’s more about the actual ways the Innocent can clear conditions than how many there are.

The fact that the Innocent gets to clear conditions when their teammates tell them they win victories their future self couldn’t, or when their teammates tell them they couldn’t possibly turn into their future self, means that the Innocent will have incentive to pursue those situations instead of, say, breaking something important or hurting someone, or running away from a difficult situation. If the player would rather clear conditions through those base methods, it’s their choice—but this way, the Innocent has alternatives which will often be more attractive, and which will push the Innocent towards their own issues.
