After tonight’s finale, the next Age was determined to include an Arthurian Camelot complete with questing knights, a Mafia-like society, and a city suspended on a disc above a massive colosseum of rib bones.

Awesome fun all round.

Question:

– how often do MCs award Surpluses outside of specific moves?

– trials and fortunes add to a Family’s stats but there seems no real way they decrease. Do these just keep growing age by age?

  1. MCs award Surpluses and Needs according to the the fiction. Stats go down when a Family’s Mood gets low enough that triggers whatever that Move is. I think some Trials also lower stats?

But do consider that this is a game about rebuilding in the aftermath of the apocalypse. Ot makes sense to mostly trend upwards as the years and generations pass, to represent humanity coming together to make something other than scattered bands of survivors again.

  2. Yeah, given how important they are I really struggle with handing out Surpluses. I find Needs are OK as I feel a 6- can justify them, but the lack of a system for Surpluses leaves me unsure.

  3. We’re putting a system for adding surpluses into the world into the next release! In particular, we’re turning Uncover Secrets into a move players can use to identify how for find a surplus or remove a need, along with adding useful features to the map.

Re: stats, it’s intentional that you trend upwards; that’s why no family Stat starts above 1.

  4. Cool. I was thinking along the lines of a Research move for Surpluses where the GM can put the costs in gaining a particular Surplus. It’s tricky as you don’t want a sure fire way of gaining Surpluses.

  5. So here’s the 3 move Surplus Update:

    FINDING A SURPLUS

When your family claims or creates a significant resource in the fiction, add it as a surplus.

    RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB

When your family uses their resources to confront a crisis, erase an appropriate surplus and mitigate or resolve the problem.

    UNCOVER SECRETS

When you gather your family’s specialists in council, roll +Data spent. On a hit ask 1:

    • “How do I get Surplus: __”,

    • “How do I remove Need: __”,

    • “What’s the truth behind __”

    • “How can we best make use of __”.

For each answer, add an appropriate detail to the map.

On a 10+, ask a second question or add to the map one of:

    • A powder keg ready to explode.

    • A place to shelter from harm.

    • A barrier that impedes travel.
