If you change playbooks, do you keep your other advancements or do you restart to zero as if you created a new character? Also, what about the abilities? Does the player keep them as they transition to the next playbook or will the player need to reimagine them to fit the next playbook? (Of course changing to a Beacon would require the player to lose powers or have them severely weakened.)

Currently running a game right now and one of the players had enough advancements to choose “Change Playbooks”.

  1. >do you keep your other advancements or do you restart to zero.

You clear all your advancements above the line, but not below the line. CRB 117

Be true to the fiction about them changing playbooks.

For example, in a game I was playing in, we had a Janus change playbooks to the Star. This was more about changing how she interacted with the world, rather than how her powers worked, so she kept all her old Janus powers, but stopped caring as much about keeping her identity secret.

You get whatever moves the playbook tells you to take, as if you were building a new character with that playbook. You also get whatever extras the

playbook describes. Keep your Labels exactly the same as they were before you switched playbooks, keep any conditions you had marked, keep any

potential you have currently marked, and keep any Influence you hold over other characters.

  3. You normally have a short talk with the player who is switching, deciding which to keep on the Transition….but it really ends up on a case by case basis depending on the change, moves in question, and what makes sense. Some advancements may be lost…or they may not…..really comes down to the individual characters.

  4. Sometimes you will keep extras from a previous playbook. Sometimes not.

The Doomed’s Doom and Doomsigns is the only one that for sure goes away if you change playbooks. Though you might keep your Sanctuary.

If your secret ID is revealed when you go from Janus to Nova you might lose the Mask and Obligations. Alternately you might keep the Obligations even if you lose The Mask. Because you still have a civilian life even if people know you to be a super too.
