Trying to find a suitable format for running a game with some friends online.

They are literally from all over the world and some are interested but it would have to be online.

Google Hangouts was an option when I saw the demo from 2015 that Marrisa ran a few years ago, until I saw they removed app support completely.

Roll20 has been considered, but even though it has some features I can use, I am pretty sure not everyone is going to be comfortable with it.

Any suggestions?

  1. Discord has decent video chat and text chat, and supposedly there are ways to make it do dice rolling as well. Or you could just let everyone roll their own dice at their own desks.

  2. If you don’t use a virtual tabletop app like roll20, you will probably still need something to put character sheets, images, links on. A lot of people use google docs or google slides for that.

In discord you can have rolls by using a bot that will react to messages starting with /roll. It needs some investment for selecting and configuring a dice bot though, if you are not part of a community that already maintains something like that.

Remember that roll20 can be as complex or as simple as you choose.

  3. Thanks for the input everyone.

We are already all using Discord, and I have been looking at RPBot as a way to parse information.

Making everyone comfortable in a play space seems possible now.
