Announce Future Badness

Hello everyone! Apparently G+ is morphing slowly out of existence. I’m sad about that, but so it goes. We will still be here for the next 6-8 months, so don’t fret. Probably till the last day. Meanwhile, the maelstrom has announced future badness, so yes, I’m looking for where to move this community. I’m looking for something without a paywall and with good business practices that feels user-friendly and supports longer discussions. Not sure where that is yet though. Do know that I will let you know where I’m going and where you are welcome to come too, if you wish to join me.

Love,

Your MB

UPDATE: We’ve got 8 months. I’m gonna do the research and see where I want to be. Until then, I’ll be here.

  1. I’d love to follow! One venue that might be worth considering is ENWorld (http://www.enworld.org/forum/forum.php). Historically it has been focussed on D&D, but it covers general roleplaying, boardgames and such as well, in a php forum type interface. There’s no paywall, Morrus (Russell Morrissey) has been pleasant and professional to deal with when I have done so, but I have experience only as a contributor, so I can’t say what his offering for “quasi-official” input might be. I find the interface there easy to use, and have had some long and sometimes fruitful discussions there in the past (regarding D&D 4E and DungeonWorld, mainly).

  2. The more I learn about MeWe, the more I want nothing to do with it. I’m not looking for an echo chamber, but if Alex Jones and open fascists have been welcomed in and given a platform, it’s not for me. Basically the only limit Vincent and I put on using PbtA or our words in a game is if it supports actual Nazis, so if the reports are true, and I’m seeing more and more of them, we will not be going there.

ETA: seems to be a legitimate concern about MeWe. Super not happy about this. You know I like all y’all so much I built a place here to hang out with you.

  3. There is something to be said, though, for a fresh influx of users who are willing to put up with it temporarily knowing that they can help shape the future updates. If there are suddenly a bunch of G+ refugees calling it home I’m sure the devs would devote resources to making it a more satisfying experience.

  4. Joshua R. Leuthold exactly my point. There is a highly engaged community here on Google Plus. If a good portion of those users switched over to RPGgeek, it would be a boon for the site and I think the devs would take notice. As I had said, they are updating BGG and have plans to adapt those changes to their other properties. The focus is on BGG because that is where their heavy user base is, but that can change.

It also it not a small thing to me that they are a table tip gaming focused company already. They understand this audience.
