So one of my players is using the Changeling playbook and wants to use Constant Companion so she has an ally. In the mystery, at some point stuffed animals are going to come to life, and I was going to surprise her by giving her that for an ally, however, after talking to her, she wants a Backup Ally, and stuffed animals aren’t exactly known for their fighting prowess.

So I see three options

Have her go ahead and make her own backup ally and drop the bear-as-ally thing, either turning it against the team or just making it ineffectual (the other stuffed animals are going to be spies for the monster)

Give the bear some kind of magic attacks for backup with some kinda bs about it having absorbed magic coming off the changeling girl over the years

Or I have her make her own ally and still have the bear come into play as a lieutenant. Maybe one that works with the entire team instead of just the one hunter.

Thoughts? Also, how do you guys usually handle backup Allies?

  1. I love the magic bear idea tbh. Or maybe the bear has absorbed the magic and it’s made them big and beefy. Still full of cotton, of course, but big and beefy.

  2. Teddy Bears traditionally hunt and eat the monsters under the bed. I see no problem having a teddy bear with a tiny wooden sword of monster slaying being the big bad back up character

  3. Ohmygosh! And what if the Teddy Bear has actually been protecting her ALL ALONG?!

Oh, if I didn’t make it clear earlier, the player chose a Teddy Bear part of the Changeling’s gear

  4. Jenny Taylor another place to look for inspiration is the game Monsters and other Childish Things. (Also the new game by Plaid Hat, Stuffed Fables is about children’s toys protecting and guiding a small child.)

  5. Michael Phillips Monsters and Other Childish things is sort of about the problems caused by young children having pet/guardian monsters that are very strong, somewhat amoral, and only provided guidance by someone with the self control and mindset of a child
