We know the imminent G+ shutdown is lingering in the back of all our minds! Before we get sucked into the black hole that can be the holiday season, we would like to gather some intel on where and how our fans would like to transition this community.

Some of you may already use Discord or Reddit, but we know some people find those spaces difficult to navigate. That said, some people want to avoid using Facebook for gaming conversations. While there might not be a perfect space, we’d love a medium in which everyone feels comfortable free to engage, and able to easily reach out to us with questions about gameplay, mechanics, etc.

In addition to options like Discord or Facebook, we’re also considering opening up our own Magpie forums on magpiegames.com as we revamp the site over the next couple of months. Please let us know if that option seems of interest to you!

Let the polling commence! And, of course, more detailed feedback in the comments is always welcome 🙂

  1. I’m becoming a big fan of MeWe. There are a ton of gaming groups over there following the G+ diaspora. But, since you need a public face and MeWe does not have public facing pages (Yet! It is in development), I’ll vote for FB as a wise business choice for you with forum a close second. On the subject of forums, it’s essential that they link to the front page of your company web site to give them the exposure they’ll need for new traffic.

  2. It’s not perfect, but of these options, I’d have to go with Reddit. Discord is great for live conversations, but the lack of threading makes it a pretty terrible choice for community building or having multiple conversations going at once. Channels help, but they’re not a replacement for threads/topics.

  3. You also have the headache of hosting and administration. Depending on the size of the staff (or volunteers), it might not be feasible. It certainly is the best option if you desire control.

  4. And with forums you constantly have to moderate, deal with spammers, constantly update the forum software due to security and bug updates, which could cause the database to corrupt potentially causing the kids of all data if backups aren’t done.

  5. Discord is a terrible choice for the sorts of conversations we have here; It lacks threading of any sort, so it’s just like piling everything in a big heap, and it’s super difficult to “Browse back” in. Sure, you can search for terms, but that’s not remotely equivalent.

My preferences, in order from least good to most preferred would be:

Facebook (Ick. Not on it, won’t join to follow games)

Discord (Awkward to use for this)

    Reddit (It’s fine I guess)

    Forums! (Yay, I’m old fashioned)
