When you want to get stuff done, make a Trigger Action Plan.

The thing in question likely never gets done – or if it does, it’s only after remaining undone for a long time and causing a considerable amount of stress. Leaving the “when” ambiguous means that there isn’t anything that would propel you into action.

I’ve been working on this textual exoplanet description generator for a while now. It’s at a point where I’m pretty proud of it. Here’s an example:

Xi Virgo e, “Santopitar”

A average 1.06 Earth-mass, perfectly temperate 280 (± 10) Kelvin rocky silicate planet with almost 1.7 times the expected density and gravity, and a crushing 16 atm atmosphere of reactive gasses spotted with vivid reddish-orange clouds and extreme winds. One hemisphere is coated with glassy reddish-orange lowlands and with a few large strangely warped chasms and the other; marked by dozens of cellular craters packed with crystalline oxygen, and isolated regions dominated by cellular reddish-orange dunes. The surface material is otherwise undifferentiated drab beige cobble.

When starting a PbtA game, your group could decide to give the campaign a certain flavor by choosing to “open” one of the playbooks. This would give all characters access to choose moves from that playbook. You might start with that playbook’s starting moves in addition to your own, or it might involve some effort to unlock.

As an example, a DW campaign in grim dark world where there is only war might open the Fighter: everyone gets a fun weapon and is more capable in combat.

Obviously this warps the PbtA philosophy of character uniqueness; I’m not super interested in discussing whether its a good idea or not in that light, aside from mentioning that it can be thought of as a (probably?) simple, easily accessible hack of the base game.

I saw posted here or in DW Tavern not long ago, a fairly exhaustive list of effects a Move might have (roll, use a different stat for another move, add a choice to a move, etc), to aid in hacking.  Anyone have a link readily available?

Does anyone know of a good resource similar to Dungeon World’s Instincts, Knacks, and Quirks for NPC generation?

Does anyone know of a good resource similar to Dungeon World’s Instincts, Knacks, and Quirks for NPC generation?  Most of those should work for UW but I’m wondering if there’s something that has more of a space opera flavor.

I’ll be GMing for the first time (for any rpg) tomorrow.  I’ve made it explicitly a two-shot, and I have two different groups (next group will be next weekend, and I’ll be able to apply lessons learned from this one).  I’d appreciate any feedback or advice on my plans to turn the sandbox nature of UW into more of a one-two punch, with some shortcuts in character creation and structure, while hopefully retaining player-prompted content. Also feel free to take inspiration from the ideas here!
