Hey guys, I’m looking for some feedback on the plausibility of a mission scenario I’m working on…

The idea, so far, goes like this: A Hacker NPC was on a mission with his team where things went sideways and they were all killed while he was inside the Matrix. He believes his body has been damaged because he’s unable to Jack Out despite not being detained by Black ICE or seeing any other obvious reason. He was able to grab the Data he was after while he was inside and has it stored safely behind an encrypted partition in his Neural Interface.

The Hacker NPC contacts the team via VR for a locate and extraction mission. This mission is obviously on a very short time table, as he can’t confirm where he is or how much the Corp he ran the mission against knows, but he can tell them where he was when things went dark. His connection is intermittent at best, which will be revealed by signs of a weak signal in the form of digital breakup on his avatar or loss of contact/dropped calls.

I’m thinking he’s been injured and is in a sort of comatose state. The Corp that he was running against has him and he’s being prepped for transport to a tech facility so his Neural Interface can be extracted and the body discarded.

The Hacker will offer a ton of cred to complete this one (I’m thinking default will be x3 what the players stake as though the players rolled well on Get The Job and opted for more cred, and x4 if they make the roll and decide to go that way).

One obstacle I’m coming up against is why the megacorp he was running the mission against doesn’t just outright kill him. Maybe he deleted the original source file and the backup he has in his neural interface storage is the only remaining copy of the code, but they’re aware of the failsafe he has that will purge his system if he dies.

Anyhow, I think I’m onto something here, but I wanted to see if you guys had any fun details to add or if you see any gaping plot holes in my premise.

I managed to snag some writing time this weekend and wrote up the second sample mission that will be included with Necropolis.

It’s called Body Snatchers. If you’d like to take a look I pulled it out into its own document:

Hey guys, I’ve written up my take on an extraction mission and I thought I would share it and maybe get some feedback. It’s currently personalized with my game group’s specific corporations and gangs and stuff, but I imagine you can easily swap those out for your own setting details.

So yeah, please take a look and let me know what you think!

So, I’ve kind of been obsessing over a way to do this.

So, I’ve kind of been obsessing over a way to do this.

So, I’ve kind of been obsessing over a way to do this. Since I read the World of Darkness: Chicago for the chronicles of Darkness line I have been trying to find a way to simulate factions acting against each other in ways that are both subtle and political on one hand, and overt and aggressive on the other. I’ve looked at both fronts from apocalypse world and dungeon world, and factions from Stars Without Number. I am now looking at 2ed Apocalypse world threats. During this research I cam across the Unruly tag which has you create subfactions within the faction and have them periodically make moves against one another. I want to do that in the sprawl. I want to have a group of lower level, city-bound factions act against one another in the background while the player characters do things. What frame work would be good for building small faction moves to not only relate to their attention on the players but each other?

Could use a little help brainstorming.

Could use a little help brainstorming.

Could use a little help brainstorming. Interesting obstacles for cyber comms? Is the main purpose to keep in contact among team members? Or is it for surveillance on people around you. How wide of range do you offer something like this?

What I got so far is mostly monitoring enemy comms. Maybe a significant broadcast for them to breach? My team has no hackers, so everything is going to have a more hardware over software feel I think.

Okay, so here’s my first mission for The Sprawl.

Okay, so here’s my first mission for The Sprawl. I’m sure that there is room for improvement. This is for a 4-hour convention slot coming up in mid-February.

Be gentle 😉

Okay peeps. Gimme some shiny ideas.

Okay peeps. Gimme some shiny ideas.

Okay peeps. Gimme some shiny ideas.

Our plucky operatives have infiltrated the factory-island of Zanzibar, where the megacorp Ikea-Stewart makes their prefab office modules. (You can buy a whole office, smartly decorated, and all wired up, and then ship it around the globe to whatever office block your job takes you to!). They have already planted the trojan horse in the office software template that will do who-knows-what for their employers. They’re on their way off the island (planning on stowing away inside a prefab office as it’s put onto one of the nuclear-powered Monsanto-Maersk superships in the harbor).

But. In their initial research, they did discover an odd thing. The Jozani forest, at the core of the island, is the only bit that hasn’t been paved over and industrialized. And in the middle of that forest are three, large, building-shaped heat signatures, at least according to satellite imagery. Reckoning that whatever Ikea-Stewart is hiding in the middle of a forest in the middle of a factory in the middle of a heavily-fortified island must be valuable, the operatives are going to take a peek before leaving the island.

Of course I, the MC, have no freakin’ idea what those heat signatures actually are. Any ideas? What’s something appropriately valuable and appropriately dangerous for these poor saps to wander into?

Hello!

Hello!

Hello! The Gauntlet has a new free issue of our zine, Codex, available on our website. This one is called Chrome and features a starter for The Sprawl called #chrome_rot.exe (written by the talented Fred Bednarski), as well as a set of tables for cosmetic cyberware. It’s completely free (just follow the link!) and if you enjoy it, please consider supporting us on Patreon!

I wrote a VIP protection mission where the VIPs can die, but the rock concert / demonstration they started must go on! The PCs are in a set location and a truckload of assassins are on the way. Hopefully they use the Legwork phase as Hamish intended and drive off / kill / brainwash some of their opposition into doing something else.

Also I owe Trung Bui a huge debt for thinking through a good way to organize all this. And I think I stole his font choices.
