Hiya!

Hiya!

Hiya! Planning on running my first ever Urban Shadows game in a week or so. I’m fairly experienced with Apoc World, so the rules all make sense, but I’m just wondering about how much prep is worth doing prior to the game.

For instance, 80% of all my AW games have had the entire setting created during character creation, villains plots and all. Have people experienced similar things with Urban Shadows?

Secondly, in AW it’s easy to tell someone “you have no food, what do you do next?” and create an impetus that way. Is there a similar big red button in Urban Shadows, or will I need to be more creative with my plots?

We know the imminent G+ shutdown is lingering in the back of all our minds! Before we get sucked into the black hole that can be the holiday season, we would like to gather some intel on where and how our fans would like to transition this community.

Some of you may already use Discord or Reddit, but we know some people find those spaces difficult to navigate. That said, some people want to avoid using Facebook for gaming conversations. While there might not be a perfect space, we’d love a medium in which everyone feels comfortable free to engage, and able to easily reach out to us with questions about gameplay, mechanics, etc.

In addition to options like Discord or Facebook, we’re also considering opening up our own Magpie forums on magpiegames.com as we revamp the site over the next couple of months. Please let us know if that option seems of interest to you!

Let the polling commence! And, of course, more detailed feedback in the comments is always welcome 🙂

Rules doubt: Advancement –> ‘A move from another archetype’

Rules doubt: Advancement –> ‘A move from another archetype’

May a player choose the main move from another archetype? By main I mean the move that is preselected for that archetype.

I know you may not get extras from another playbook by choosing a move from that playbook that references it. That is, you may not chose Channeling from the Wizard playbook to get access to wizard spells, because spells are an extra. But, what happens to moves that do not grant you any extra?

Example:

Lets say I play a Wolf playbook. I do not only slash and kill my enemies, but I also eat their hearts in front of the pack. After a few sessions, I choose an advancement and mark ‘A move from another playbook’. That move is ‘Eternal Hunger’ from the Vamp playbook. That move does not grant you any extra, but it is the basic Vamp move that comes preselected for Vamps.

I am not infected by vampirism, I do not want any vamp web or such, so I do not wish to use the ‘Change to another archetype’ advancement. I just think that move would fit very well to my savage, heart-eater wolf.

Is that allowed by the rules?

Does anyone know of a place I can get my hands on some Archetype playbooks that are more streamlined?

Does anyone know of a place I can get my hands on some Archetype playbooks that are more streamlined? Like without all the extra art and such. I want to print out a bunch for several friends but I don’t feel like wasting a bunch of ink.

With the closure of Google+ I was just wondering if anyone had any idea if the group will be moving to a different forum? I know a lot of other TTRPG games are moving to the MeWe platform.

I didn’t see a group for Magpie Games or Urban Shadows there. Just thought I would toss this out there.

Do threat clocks advancements happen “on-screen”?

Do threat clocks advancements happen “on-screen”?

In some of the examples, threat countdown clocks tick down early with somewhat mundane stuff at the 3:00, such as two NPC’s meeting each other, not necessarily requiring the PC’s to be present. I get that warning players of impending danger is a MC move I can use, but sometimes it doesn’t make fictional sense for the PC’s to be present at that scene. So can I cloak a move to have it happen anyways, but not inform the players that it happened or should I look for other opportunities?
