Slightly updated version of The Howl of the Storm from the upcoming AW supplement Aftermather by myself and Joe Mcdaldno (that’s his art here). Haven’t gotten a chance to test out these moves in play yet, because I haven’t been in a game with the Solace yet, but pretty excited about them.

  1. Tim Franzke Haven’t finalized or playtested the Survivor yet either. I definitely want to see the newer moves at the table before declaring them “done.”

  2. What I enjoy about it on paper is the incentive it gives to say you are a wolf of the maelstrom as well as to actively work to get the Solace killed, while the Solace has incentive to give you Moves to ‘fix’ you.

  3. To elaborate slightly, even if the Solace gives the wolves some moves, my design goal is for them to never quite be “normal.” They become wolves who’ve been trained or bound (like a demon) to act more human (or at least, how the Solace thinks humans should act).

  4. Absolutely. It is just a built in tension, that’s more explicit than the ones that exist between the existing Playbooks (the leader type ones have a lot of places where they are pushed into conflict).

  5. I would like to play a Solace (or if someone else did I wouldn’t mind playing a Wolf).

Though I’m imagining a game based on this where all the PCs are Wolves except for the Solace. That would be interesting, especially in terms of deciding which Wolves to tame.

  6. Speaking of Momma, I’m considering changing the “cacophony of violence” result for removing your disguise to something that’s more Maelstrom-y. Like everyone present opens their brains, or the Maelstrom asks you what you most desire and you have to Act Under Fire to resist going after it right now.

  7. I interpreted it as an inversion of the threshold ability of the Solace. It makes a place decidedly unsafe.

Though a way to do that which would have more Maelstrom tie in might be inflicting psi-harm as an option when regular harm is dealt out (as part of the harm move or something like that).

The other might be to make it so that you automatically open your brain when committing acts of violence or the like.

  8. I thought I saw it referenced in another place as well—but true, assuming psi-harm for a Playbook that isn’t related to a Quarantine limits the usability or forces you to introduce it with that Playbook as well.

I like the general idea of if you do X normal thing, you also have to open your brain. Which comes from the Quarantine as well.
