We spontaneously decided to have a Monsterhearts Reskin contest on the Empowered by the Apocalypse server on Discord; we’ve each picked one Skin to do-over, then we’ll swap them around and play someone else’s Skin in a session!

Here’s my Ghost Redux anyway.

Yesterday, we conducted a Frankenstein PbtA experiment: we each picked two moves from different PbtA games and threw them together in the melting pot to see what kind of game they suggested. The moves could be from anywhere in each game, so basic, peripheral or playbook, but the concept required that they all be treated as basic moves for our game.

We ended up with moves from Dungeon World, Velvet Glove, Apocalypse World and Masks, among others: the combination of these lead us to create a setting about magical female spies for a fantasy kingdom who went into situations to prevent wars and other conflicts from breaking out! It was epic and fun and we even got a serious story out of it in which our characters judged and executed a young noble.

It briefly gave me the urge to compile an encyclopedia of PbtA moves and pack it with rules for the ‘create your own unique game & setting’ our MC presented us with.

Some of the inspiration came from Crowsmantle, which encourages players to collaborate in creating entirely new moves and other mechanics for the game; our MC for that just thought “Hey, you could just use existing moves from other games,” and it snowballed from there.

Another hack that will never exist…

Pick an historical figure and a playbook to match them, then go through these questions with the rest of the table:

– Who else knows something good about that historical figure?

– If everybody does, take Fame+2

– If some people do, take Fame+1

– If nobody does, take Fame=0

– Who else knows something bad about that historical figure?

– If everybody does, take Infamy+2

– If some people do, take Infamy+1

– If nobody does, take Infamy=0

– Your Anonymity is set so that the sum of your stat scores is +2

– If you have Fame+2 and Infamy+2, then take Anonymity-2

– If you have Fame+2 and Infamy+1 (or vice versa), then take Anonymity-1

– If you have Fame=0 and Infamy=0, than take Anonymity+2

I’ve been playing about with skins based on tropes from sources like Buffy, Smallville and further afield, but these are untested yet (and some of them are a rougher draft than others; also, stock art is meh)

For my light, soap opera PbtA game: “Each time you roll with a stat that is not highlighted, you gain 1 fandom and highlight that stat. At the start of the next episode, all the leads take turns to narrate an opening montage: they quickly recap a line of their dialogue or an action they took in the previous episode and unhighlight the stat relating to that. Keep going around the table, taking turns, until all the stats of all the leads are unhighlighted once again.”

I think this could even work well as part of one-shot play: start everyone with 2 or 3 fandom (experience) and get them to recap the imaginary previous episode! 馃榾

I’m toying with a playbook move for a sort of comic-relief character whose main schtick is that they mess things up but serendipity saves the day. One of the moves I want them to have is Clueless, which prevents them from making the equivalent of Read a sitch in this hack.

The overall thrust of the move is that they always miss when they make the information gathering move, but when any PC makes that move and misses, including themselves, they choose which move the MC responds with and what form it takes.

Is this too over- or under-powered? Not interesting enough? Thoughts would be appreciated.
