One thing I’ve been interested in for a while is an alternative to the Nova playbook. The Nova as written has a Charge/Burn pool mechanic rather than a set of Playbook Moves, and this makes it play in a different, crunchier style than other Masks playbooks. It’s often excluded as an option from con games for this reason. In the spirit of the Mage alternative to the Wizard playbook in Dungeon World, I jotted some thoughts down for a Nova playbook that uses Playbook Moves like other books instead of a pool mechanic. Would love people’s thoughts on this, especially if you’ve played Masks with a Nova before:

Hello everyone. This is my very first post in this Community so I’m eager to see the discussion from you all.

Hello everyone. This is my very first post in this Community so I’m eager to see the discussion from you all.

The Masks GM Sheets (available at http://www.magpiegames.com/masks/masks-playbooks-moves/) suggests a certain order in which you should ask the “When the team first came together…” questions from the various playbooks during character creation.

However, there is now twice the amount of playbooks compared to when the GM Sheets were created. So the sheets are quite outdated.

Using Doyce Testerman’s helpful post (https://plus.google.com/u/0/+DoyceTesterman/posts/MtJujJTVVJN which itself is slightly outdated now that Unbound is out), here’s my take on the question order.

Please review and/or criticize this ordering so we can have a more comprehensive list of questions to help GMs run their Masks campaigns more smoothly. Thank you all, in advance.

The fight

Bull: We defeated a dangerous enemy. Who or what was it?

Reformed: We fought a terrible enemy from my old life. Who was it and what did they take from me?

Innocent: My future self was involved, and I tried to stop them. It took the rest of the team to help me succeed. How did we stymie my future self’s plans?

Nomad: We had to deal with a danger I’d met while traveling the farscapes. What was it, and how did we send it away?

Newborn: The team discovered you during the incident; thanks to them, you reached the outside world and helped in the fight. Where and how did they find you? Who gave you your first nickname?

Nova: We destroyed our surroundings in the fight. Where was it? What did we destroy?

Outsider: We didn’t trust each other at first, but that changed. How? Why?

Immediate consequence

Janus: We saved the life of someone important, either to the city, or to us. Who was it? Why are they important?

Delinquent: We totally broke some major rules to win the fight. What rules did we break? Whose rules were they?

Joined: The connection between our two halves was threatened by the crisis. How? By what?

Doomed: We paid a high cost for victory. What was it?

Soldier: Our victory secured an important resource for A.E.G.I.S. What was it?

Long term consequence

Legacy: All things considered, we did well and impressed an established hero. Who was it?

Star: We, as a team, attracted the attention of a major media outlet within the city, thanks to our efforts. Who are they? Why do they support us?

Scion: Someone important learned about my lineage and condemned us all. Who? Why?

Transformed: We drew attention and ire from plenty during the fight. One important person in particular now hates and fears us. Who is it?

The Team coming together

Protégé: We stuck together after all was said and done. Why? How’d we keep in contact?

Brain: I created something lasting and beneficial for the whole team. What was it?

Beacon: We found signs that this incident was just the start of something bigger. What were the signs?

Harbinger: We averted a disaster from the future’s history books. What was the disaster? What effect do we hope it had on the timeline?

Edit: My intention of splitting the 20 questions into the 4 categories is that I think it’s good to ask at least one question from each category, even if no playbook from that category is present in the campaign. It just helps flesh out the event that caused the team to come together better.

I’m about to try out this custom move and am wondering what people think.

I’m about to try out this custom move and am wondering what people think. If you need context, basically Illyana Rasputin has gone Darkchilde, and the heroes want to talk her down.

Speaking with a demoness is not without its consequences.

When you try to reason with the Darkchilde, describe how Darkchilde make it terrifying, worrying, enraging, or what have you, and then roll +Savior

On a hit, you talk her into transforming into her human self, postponing her battle with Belasco, or something else within reason. Explain how the conversation ultimately went your way.

On a 7-9 remove one from the list of consequences.

On a 10+ remove two

All consequence that have not been removed apply

CONSEQUENCES

– Mark a condition

– Shift your labels (Mundane up, Savior down)

– Make a promise to the Darkchilde that she can extract from you later.

On a miss, suffer the consequences above except for the promise. And choose one of:

– Be unceremoniously expelled from Limbo

– Battle the Darkchilde

Note that anyone who aided in the roll via spending of Team Pool must also face any consequences.

So, the last thread was really cluttered and the Playbook for The Persona has moved….so insanely far from what it was to what it is I feel it’s more appropriate to re-post this. There’s a lot I could say about this Playbook. That no one asked for it (except someone did), that it doesn’t need to exist (too late), that it’s totally not what I intended to make (it really…isn’t), that it’s the longest time I’ve spent on a single Playbook (it is by a massive margin and I know we’re not done here), that a Multi-Class Playbook is just not a thing, that a PVP book is absolutely not something Masks needs or the system supports, that I’m running out of things to say, that you can save money by switching to some insurance company.

But really there isn’t that much more to say. The Persona is meant to fill in the role of a hero that needs to take extreme measures to fight the good fight. He’s the ends that the means can’t justify. He’s the shadow of the team, but he’s part of the team all the same.

I took out a lot of stuff for this. Really whitteled it down to what it needed to be. I reworked the Token system to the point it went away. I reworked the Darkness mechanic until most of the rolling should be done by roleplaying. Like the game intends. It went from A Doomed+Janus concept to its own thing. The mission you have should be part of the overall story. The bonuses you get should help no matter what Persona you’re wearing. The moves support someone who leans on their hero side, their alias side or tries to balance both. The Relationships are way better now.

It’s a new playbook.

I am eager to present to you, for the first time and not the first time, The Persona. Catch me next time before the curtain falls on G+ for The Advocate

With some help from the player I made it for and the rest of my table, I think this is in a good enough shape to share. The Persona. A Playbook no one asked (someone..did but ya know) but I made anyway.

It’s certainly a mechanical monstrosity but I feel it’s fairly…balanced.

I tinkered with this today for a bit, I’m not in a place where I think it’s perfect but I think it’s a good start.

I tinkered with this today for a bit, I’m not in a place where I think it’s perfect but I think it’s a good start. I call it Firebrand and devised it for The Delinquent as a mechanic to make them less beholden to the more narratively dominating Playbooks like The Doomed or The Protege whose mechanics sort of make their issues front and center.

Firestarter

Rebel Tokens ❑ ❑ ❑ ❑ ❑

You’re not just some good for nothing, raging against the machine with sound and fury signifying nothing. You have a reason for shutting people out, for fighting your fight and for harboring the wounds you harbor. Pick one Obstacle.

A powerful, established hero or organization whose methods you find disagreeable.

A personal issue you can’t simply overcome with time.

Familial or outside obligations and expectations.

Any time you work against these Obstacles, by either thwarting or rejecting authority or opening up about your own problems to friends, gain one Rebel Token. A Player may have up to five Rebel Tokens at once and they roll over between Sessions. If a Player gains any Rebel Tokens beyond five, they must Mark a Condition instead. Rebel Tokens may be used to buy various effects as listed

Clear a Condition when successfully Rejecting someone’s Influence (1 Token)

Shift Labels, GM’s Choice (1 Token)

Take +1 forward to impede, agitate or thwart a target. This target must have Influence over you (1 Token)

Clear an additional Condition when Comforting or Supporting a teammate, the teammate must have Influence over you (2 Tokens)

Take +1 forward to impede, agitate or thwart a target. The target need not have Influence over you (2 Tokens)

Take something from an opponent as if you’d successfully rolled a Directly Engage (2 Tokens)

Gain either a vehicle, communicators, false identities, badges of authority, or simple robots from the Mentor’s Resources for a scene (3 Tokens)

Gain an Audience from The Star but take a singular Advantage instead of two. You may maintain this Audience for a session but must make a roll + superior to maintain it when time passes (5 Tokens)

It’s simple. It’s hacky but there’s something beautiful in there.

I can feel it.
