The Penanggalan or ‘Hantu Penanggal’ is a creature of Southeast Asian folk mythology. “Penanggal” or “Penanggalan” literally means “detach” or “remove”.

According to the folklore of that region, the Penanggalan is a detached female head capable of flying about on its own. As it flies, the stomach and entrails dangle below it, and these organs twinkle like fireflies as the Penanggalan moves through the night. In Malaysian folklore, a Penanggal may be either a beautiful old or young woman who obtained her beauty through the active use of black magic, supernatural, mystical, or paranormal means which are most commonly described in local folklores to be dark or demonic in nature. Due to the common theme of Penanggal being the result of active use of black magic or supernatural means, a Penanggal cannot be readily classified as a classical undead being. The creature is, for all intents and purposes, a living human being during daytime or at any time when it does not detach itself from its body. Sometimes they are depicted as able to move their intestines when exposed like tentacles.

A Penanggal is said to feed on human blood although local folklore (including its variations) commonly agrees that a Penanggal prefers the blood of a newborn infant, the blood of woman who recently gave birth or the placenta (which is devoured by the Penanggal after it is buried). All folktales also agree that a Penanggal flies as it searches and lands to feed. Once the Penanggal leaves its body and is safely away, it may be permanently destroyed by either pouring pieces of broken glass into the empty neck cavity, which will sever the internal organs of the Penanggal when it reattaches to the body; or by sanctifying the body and then destroying it by cremation or by somehow denying the Penanggal from reattaching to its body upon sunrise.

A few sessions ago, my hunters found a grimoire during a mystery and ended up keeping it. To make the grimoire feel more real, I gave them a list of summoning spell titles and have prepared a corresponding monster for each spell. I liked how the monsters turned out, so I figured I would post them here! Feel free to use them exactly as they are or change ’em up completely!

A couple notes…

1) Keep in mind that none of these monsters (with the exception of the Salmon of Knowledge) have seen play yet, so I can’t personally vouch for all the mechanical stuff. Tweak as you see fit.

2) Since these are monsters designed to be summoned and not the centerpieces of their own mysteries, I created some new monster motivations, such as the Worker (to carry out a job or mission) and the Survivor (to act in self defense). Again, you may want to tweak these depending on what you have in mind for your mystery.

2) Of course, you don’t have to follow my lead and introduce a grimoire into your game, but y’all, it’s such a fun wild card. Tonight my hunters summoned the Salmon of Knowledge in the middle of a mystery thinking it would help them, and in their hubris nearly got themselves killed trying to eat the damn thing before either one of them bothered to Investigate or Read a Bad Situation. We were all in tears with laughter by the end. Bottom line is that I highly recommend saying the phrase “try to kick the Salmon’s ass” at least once in your life.

Dunno if this has been shared here before, but in case y’all haven’t seen it, enjoy a nice big inspiration dump.

Shoggoth!

Shoggoth!

Shoggoth! Anybody got any adventures or ideas using them? Currently thinking of a group of stooges getting their mitts on a collection of lovecraftian devices. One turns a person or persons into a shoggoth. So was thinking of a small, medium, and large as the baddies get more sacrifices to use.

Figuring on something weird happening along with the damage and probably fire being the weakness? Nothing too crazy. Then add in some moves and ideas related to their protoplasmic state.
