For ‘hood, an Apocalypse World hack about life on the streets, by James Mullen,

When you duel another in performance (freestyle rap, street dance, flyting/dozens), roll+brass. On a 10+ choose 3, on a 7-9 choose 2:

-Your opponent accepts your victory.

-You impress the crowd.

-You catch the interest of a patron; they must have you.

-You aren’t left dog tired.

Whaddya think Tommy Rayburn

Edit: Fixed name above. Sorry James!

  1. What do you think of “you impress your opponent” instead of “your opponent accepts your victory”?

This allows a challenge between two players, with two “winners”, each of them impressed by the other.

  2. Steve Moore and Kasper Brohus, ‘Hood is much more a game closer to the movies of Snatch and Trainspotting, but Aaron Friesen and I were talking yesterday that if there was a dance/rap move it would change the feel entirely.

  3. Simone Micucci I like it.

And thanks Tommy! I don’t know how I messed that up. I was looking at the chat window when I typed it too, so it’s not like I didn’t have the name on hand. Bleh.

  4. Tommy Rayburn I am familiar with the game and the genre.  My offhand comment was not leading anywhere or being critical, merely noting that it is a relatively unique mechanic for conflict resolution.  I concur that it does create a different feel for the game.

My initial impression is that this kind of duel adds a different motivation that does not involve the next monetary score, however, I seem to remember some money changing hands in some situations. This almost needs a Reputation mechanic to make it mean more when you win/lose, but that adds a lot of mechanics to account for all of the playbooks.

  5. Steve Moore I thunk the mechanic is fine between Dough and Debt/Payback.

One thing that could be interesting is that if this is two PC’s that the loser will receive one Heat from the winner.

  6. That looks cool and intriguing and yes, it does change the feel of the game, which is a fascinating effect to achieve with a single move.

Maybe to be more in keeping with the shape and tone of other moves in the hack, it should look like this.

When you duel another in performance (freestyle rap, street dance, flyting/dozens), roll+brass. On a hit, you impress everyone who was watching you perform and choose options. On a 10+ choose 1, on a 7-9 choose 2.

-Your opponent is humiliated: mark them for payback or they take +1 debt with you.

-You’re worn out by your performance.

-The performance brings you to the attention of the authorities.

Thanks for the addition Aaron! 🙂

  7. There may be some easter eggs… the Pimp started that way on the website and besides the Hacker playbook we talked about, there is one other I’m considering. A character type who is an essential part of the ‘hood, but one who hasn’t been discussed at all yet and for whom the rap battle move might be a good fit… 😉
