I saw somewhere that someone had posted a brief guide on how to fairly easily take a photo and turn it into the stylistic cover shots that are on all of the playbooks. However my Google-Fu has failed me. Anyone got that guide saved in their bookmarks and want to hook me up w/ a link?

Definitely want to know this
I’ve found these before and always forget where…
Paging Patrick Henry Downs …
I think this is probably the one you’ve heard reference to:

But I think this is an earlier step in the development of the style Vincent used for Apocalypse World. You’d clearly need to pump this up a bit more to get to the black and white style he uses.
Jason Godesky I think that is the tutorial I saw! Thanks! That said, if someone has improved on it, I certainly wouldn’t mind access to more advanced tech! (:
I haven’t seen it in tutorial form yet. This is the only one I’ve seen, but I think it’s pretty clear this isn’t exactly the process Vincent used for AW.
I’ve had a bit of success using Filter>Sketch>Stamp …
Dave Fried When I tried, it took a bit more finangling than that, and it still didn’t turn out exactly the way I wanted.
Vincent’s tutorial omits the part where he deletes the photograph layer and just uses the black and white layers. Other methods include high contrast plus either the cutout filter or livetrace to make a B&W vector image.
Johnstone Metzger is right. Simply you have to set black layer and white one opacity to 100% (so you completely cover the original photo, and obtain the AW style)
You could also Posterize to two colors (black and white) after fidgeting with the contrast and a bit of clean up. I got similar results on a photo project I did: http://www.nathanblack.com/2013/04/face-face-face-by-face-limits-fest/
I don’t use filters or anything because I want to make decisions about how much detail to include in, e.g., the hands & faces vs the rest of the image.
I have followed John Harper ‘s advice and switched to the pen tool though.
Start with Image > Adjustments > Levels. Mess around there until it’s close, then do details by hand.
That tutorial on Vincent’s blog is how I got started making AW art.
