I’ve just started running a game of AW – here’s the play report for my first session. I think I may come back to ask you guys some questions later.

I liked the “you have to be in the shadows to open your brain” part.
Thank you! It sort of developed naturally, but I guess I was also inspired by my earlier game, where opening your brain was connected to going under water (and we played in a sunken city). I’m curious how it’ll work in actual play – I’ll want them to open their brains, but it should also feel mysterious and cool to do so.
The Brainer actually started thinking he’d made life difficult for himself, because he figured he could only use his special moves while in shadow. I ruled that he should be able to use most of his abilities in the light, but that things like augury, which specifically mentions the malstrom, requires shadow – that’s why (partially, at least) Spider lives in the caves.
Yeah, I’m about to test the Sunken Sidney scenario and I had this exactly idea when I read what you guys did.
The interesting thing about this was that whenever anybody fell in the water, they would open their mind. It meant that falling in the water was a significant thing.
I’ll think about using this in one of the games (I might run two, in different occasions). Thanks for the tip.
