This month’s design contest at SomethingAwful’s TradGames forum is to write a *World hack. The SA crowd has been cranking out some amazing *World content, so it’s going to be pretty cool to see what people come up with.

I’m entering, even though I probably won’t finish.

  1. Well, the thread just got posted today so there’s nothing there yet. If you mean people, there’s Brandon Schmelz and Jacob Randolph who made Inverse World and a ton of DW classes, and Alex Norris who’s a friggin’ DW class-making guru.

They’re pretty much the reason I’m confident I’m not winning.

  2. Pretty sure the class-making guru title goes to Jacob and his seventy million published playbooks, I’m only good at giving people feedback on their classes.

I’m just the shmuck running it, anyway. This started out as an attempt to do a NaNoWriMo-style thing so I’d be motivated to actually write the Pacific Rim hack I was thinking about, but as I’m the biggest procrastinator it turned into a contest to encourage other people to write a hack in one month.

I’d suggest anyone who has an SA account join up if they feel like it, it should be good fun (or at least interesting).

  3. I don’t think it’s Americans only; it doesn’t go through paypal or anything.

(Just saying, not trying to force you to sign up or anything)

  4. Actually PayPal is the easiest way to pay to north american companies if you are not in the USA. It is a thing for some countries, like mine, that have strong policies regarding paying in foreign currency.

It also clashes with what I am seeing from a lot of the *W community, in terms of being open to all. I just felt like behind a curtain… made by money. And this is the first time something like this happened to me with anything related to *W :/

    Again, nevermind. And good luck!

  5. Oh, gotcha.

And I should point out that the pay is for access to all the forums, not just TradGames. There’s like 20 topic subforums, and the $10 goes to keeping the forums running.

  6. It’s a contest for people on SA, it doesn’t mean we’re betraying the open source nature of PbtA games. Expect whatever comes out of it to be posted here or elsewhere on the Internet!

  7. I am in like Flynn for this contest, but I have no idea what theme to explore yet. Maybe something cute and less violent!

If I am able to finish, I’ll be releasing a google doc version of my game.

I’m in Australia, and I’m glad I spent the $10 on an account. There are some very cool sub-communities in some of the forums and even in some threads. (Like the dungeon world thread)

There are some places on SA where I will never, ever go though.

  8. If you want ideas, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about a Dresden-like *W using Monster of the Week plus some other ideas. Or something along a fully developed Space Opera thing (like SW), or some hard Sci-Fi ala Traveller 🙂

    Wishful thinking…

  9. Tim Franzke I am not sure if you are joking or not… but I think that sounds interesting

I will be getting in on this action though with a Stargate-ish thing
