I never really watched/exposed myself to postapocalyptic stories so this will be a good place to start i hope.

When the seas rose, genetic codes were smashed. Human settlements are ringed by a dense wilderness from which ferocious new animal species prey on the helpless. The high ground belongs to the rich and powerful that overlook swampland shantytowns from their fortress-like cities. Iron-fisted rule ensures order and allows the wealthy to harvest the poor as slaves
If you look through the Fallout wiki you will find an enormous lot of material referenced, like movies and books, from the post-apocalyptic genre.
i played a bit of Fallout (2 i think) but never got far enoug hto see much of the world.
Well, the wiki – IIRC – has info on where they got the ideas from. Also, you can learn about the world much quicker than by playing the computer game. 😉
Mad Max (movie)
Book of Eli (movie)
Revolution (TV series)
Walking Dead (TV series)
Watch those in order (or movies first, at least) and your post apocalyptic education will be virtually complete. (Everything P/A is pretty much a riff off of Mad Max and it’s kin, anyway.)
Have fun!
Deadwood is an Apocalypse World game
I disagree that everything postapocalyptic is a riff on Mad Max; it’s more that the genre of Post-Apocalyptic Fiction has been strongly informed by it.
the work of james tiptree jr, for example, is full of post-apocalyptic worlds that are nothing at all like mad max (Slow Music, Houston Houston Do You Read, even The Screw-Fly Solution)
On the Beach. Post apocalypse from a submarine.
