What say ye?
Table Talk with Will and John – Episode 2: Chance & Dice
Of the AWEngine system; How much is tactical, how much is chance, which parts are roll-then-move, which parts are move-then-roll, and what parts are irrelevant to any order of process?
Roll then move angers me even more than roll then announce an action in other RPGs. I didn’t think that was possible.
Is “roll then move” where the player decides “I want to X” and rolls for it when they haven’t actually done anything to justify X in the narrative yet? ‘cuz that bugs me, too.
no, I don’t think so; that seems to me that it is outside the perspective being discussed… a completely different topic.
As it is explained in the video, for the context of my question. the difference is between blind luck and planned action –; Is your narrated choice affected as a gamble, and intention made irrelevant by complete chance from the dice after declaring an action; or is your strategical intentions given the weight of meaningful purpose, affected by discernment from the use of the roll as a catalyst for an informed follow-through on narrative intent?
I find that AWE is more ambiguous and irrelevant in the order of process used — but, I was fielding the question to the community for perspectives other than my own.
