Hi, I am interested in introducing this game to a group of four, who have never played any AW games before.  Any suggestions on which playbooks work together the best?

  1. My suggestion is: use whatever base playbook you want. Put on the table only those which are on the rulebook and don’t bother yourself with the limited edition ones. Remember to discuss about the concept of the hunter team before choosing the playbooks.

  2. I don’t really feel there’s any “best combination” of playbooks. What would help is giving the players a clear idea of who the playbooks are. Put together a list of a few characters from movies, TV, books, comics, whatever that your players are familiar with. That way you can say “The Professional? That’s like Fox Mulder from X-Files. The Expert? That’s Giles from Buffy.” Giving them clear media references will help them understand how they fit into the team and what their character is good at.

  3. Leaving out the wackier playbooks is a good idea. Of course “wacky” is subjective, so there isn’t a set list you have to leave out or anything.

After the last one-shot game I ran the guy playing the Summoned felt like he had to hold back so he didn’t overshadow the other players. I might leave that one off the table the next time I run a game.

  4. Wow thanks for the replies all!  Great advice!  I should have probably mentioned what the game was going to be about.

The idea is a B.P.R.D./Hellboy style of game using one of their famous villains – the frog monster!

I always kind of envisioned a professional or expert leading the group.  I think I may start with that one, and toss in a bunch of the weird ones.

One of my players is really, really into The Dresden files, would it be a bad idea to use Fred Hicks spell slinger playbook?
