Mark Diaz Truman< i know you and I have talked about this before. I just shared the doc with four of my players and two of them asked a question I did. What is the difference between mislead, distract or trick and persuade an NPC? We get the difference if you boil down to semantics, but there potentially is a large overlap. I think what we all get stuck on is the word "seduction".
SO MUCH CHANGE!!!!
Brain trying to comprehend all the changes.
For the MC moves, was a move added to reveal information about a location?
Tommy Rayburn – It’s all about intent. If someone is intending to convince someone of something using seduction, promises, or threats, they should persuade. If someone is trying to gain an advantage over someone else using lies, deceit or trickery, they should use mislead.
If it’s helpful, I’m happy to talk about some examples. 😀
I am sorry Mark Diaz Truman, but Deceit and Seduction are so close it’s ridiculous and that is where the issue lies. I think a wording change or a slight clarification in the move would help a lot.
Also, noticed that damage has been altered from 3, 2, 1 to 1, 2, 2? Interested in the kind of feedback that brought this up?
Tommy Rayburn The difference in practice of Persaude and Mislead/Trick/Distract would be what you’re trying to do. If you’re trying to get someone to do something for you, that’s Persaude, even if you’re using seduction. Meanwhile, if you’re trying to get someone to look the other way, or believe you’re who you aren’t, that’d be Mislead/Trick/Distract. Now, if your female Fae is using her cleavage to distract, you might call it “seduction” but the purpose of the move is clearly to Distract.
At least that’s my interpretation.
I’m a little disappointed at the change in the Wolf. I see how it hews much closer to the monstrous beast from classic Werewolf movies, but tying them to a territory and having powers ONLY activate during full moon (or every night) is a pretty big limitation.
So, I see why the flavor changed, but when I look at the archetype in hopes of playing it, I’m dismayed.
I’m putting out the word for people who might want to play at Jank on Demand next weekend. If there’s interest and we can get a follow up session, I’ll be one of the City Champions.
Nice work.
What excites me — more than any actual changes — is how responsive the designers have demonstrated they are to feedback. This is rare in gaming circles.
I really liked the Wolf. But you went and made it BETTER. Time to pore over the new version.
Scott Arnone – Yup! It’s all about intent, like distinguishing between Seize by Force and Go Aggro. Do you care about what the person does (persuade) or what they think is happening (mislead)?
Tommy Rayburn – You should also note that the Fae can distract with Heart, provided they take In Our Blood. 😀
Richard Rogers – I hear you! I was totally frustrated the first time I played The Wolf that I could only change at a full moon. But it actually works out great in play. You’re still a badass most of the time anyway, and you can snap up Sun and Moon pretty quick if you want to change whenever you want.
In addition, remember that most of Urban Shadows takes place at night. It’s like Angel or Supernatural… there are lots of characters who don’t even come out to play during the day.
EDIT: I realized I didn’t finish my thought. The Wolf playbook, like the Aware, is very much a journey. When you start without your “full” powers, it gives you a chance to grow into them in a meaningful way (like The Faceless or The Maestro.)
You can still choose “You transform every night, not just during the full moon”
I like the Wolf changes. I have played one before and some things just did not click with me. Having a territory is a great asset, good investiture in something meaningful w/ the other city denizens with mechanical benefits. I don’t mind the Alpha Dog change to be territory restrictive but getting the free Regeneration option as a starting move.
I just realized that the Tainted playbook is missing. Is that an error?
Rory MacLeod – Nope. We temporarily pulled The Tainted playbook to do some more serious work on it. It’s going to make a return soon.
Excellent timing! The soccer world championships in Brazil will conclude tomorrow, which means free evenings for role-playing! ^^
PK Sullivan, the idea of U-S being played at Jank on Demand makes me light-headed. You have no idea how much I fan-boy over you Jankers! Or is Jankists? You get the idea!
I just noticed that the margins on the tri-fold sheets are smaller than standard. This caused the first set of sheets I printed out to not fold correctly (my printer shrunk the print size by default). They need to be printed “Actual Size” in order for them to fold correctly. Just a heads up for those who are printing out hard copies.
These sheets were never meant to be folded. They’re standard 8.5×11 landscape only.
Andrew Medeiros That’s cool. We’ve got some initial interest already for JoD + 1 so hopefully it will go off.
Good catch, J.T. Mahany. We’ll be reviewing all the intro text at least one more time before we go to print. Thanks!
I’m actually running a game now with an Aware, Oracle, Dragon, Wolf and Wizard. Love the changes to the wolf but would love to see the Dragon updated 😉
So, you can ignore my earlier comment, as it turns out I was mistaken. The second word is actually “hunter,” not “hunger.” I saw “hu…r,” and my brain filled in the rest. My bad!
