I think it just might be possible to run Traveller with the Apocalypse engine more or less as written. Here’s how.

“Is this worth pursuing further?”
Look up Uncharted Worlds. There’s also a couple hacks just called Traveller World, and a few others too, I think.
I did some design work and playtesting on one of the Traveller World games last year. Honestly if I were to do it again, I would file the serial numbers off World of Dungeons, have the group create an interesting starship, and just start adventuring. It’s easy to overthink recreating the LBBs;)
Now you’ve got me wondering if anything really needs to be changed.
Maybe rename some of the classes, seriously restrict (or not) the weird…
Driver is the pilot, Hardholder is the ship owner…others seem like they’d fit relatively well. Maybe?
I’d put in DW’s bonds, instead of AW’s sex moves, depending. But Hx is still an excellent mechanic, so it’d stay.
High-tech weaponry would be really scary.
Barter makes some sense as a representation of credits. Considering how complex interstellar finance would get, having a way to abstract it would be nice. Also, you can say, ‘your barter is worth double (or half) in this system, and here’s why…’
There’s also a lot to be said for Johnstone Metzger ‘s Dungeon Planet.
Chris Bennett That’s pretty much the direction I’d be going. It seems like a stripped-down AW descendant like WoD is perfect for just replacing certain bits of the rules. The absolute last thing I’m looking for is a totally new game (or rewriting an existing one).
I ran a few sessions with classic Traveller characters and AW resolution, just using skill ratings as if they were stats. We changed the stats to bonuses the same way World of Dungeons does. It worked okay.
Johnstone Metzger That’s precisely what I’m thinking about doing.
I’ve actually contemplated doing more or less exactly that. Although I’d use Classic Traveller as my base.
As for Traveller edition wars, there just aren’t enough Traveller fans to make it worth dividing ourselves. Got to stick together.
I’ve done something similar, using Traveler (old school) and converting to Traveler World. The conversion doesn’t quite work. What I do love about the original system is the chance of death during character creation – and the wildly disparate levels of skill of character. So, ideas:
1. If you do translation, try to keep that. It isn’t quite in keeping with the spirit of the apocalypse, but you could make it happen.
2. I’d also keep social standing, in some sense or another. That was the basis for half our emergent fiction.
3. I’d stay away from Barter in place of currency. Keeping The Accountancy component is important to a lot of folk, so I discovered.
We’ve been playing for a while now….
Check out this thread, its full of goodness:

Wow, a thread I started over two years ago? It comes full circle, eh?
Rob Brennan has to take full credit though… His ruleset, layout and general awesomeness is the perfect homage to Traveller.

Err, Nathan, thanks for the praise but perfect it ain’t! It’s a workable(ish) draft based on Chris’s idea and Jim White’s enthusiasm. I agree that CT with AW-style resolution can (almost) work too.
OTOH CT seems to work pretty well as is…
Oh, I wasn’t discounting Chris! I just thought folks should see all the lovely work you put into the hack to make it work. We’ve played at least a dozen sessions, and I’ve spent 3 longhaul flights playing nothing but Traveller World (solo).
You produced and shared a pretty amazing resource. It got me back into traveller that’s for sure! And yes, the classic ruleset is way ahead of its time.
