Quick question.

Quick question.

Quick question. The Ghoul’s ‘No Rest For The Wicked’ move has the character fully healed once they return from the dead. Does this mean cosmetically as well, or just in terms of Harm?

I’ve had a character come back from the dead, but still looking, for the most part, like a corpse. Although this has been questioned by a couple of the players I’ve managed to get away with it because the Ghoul was Hexed by the Witch PC to Wither, and specifically chose to wither his skin – so I’ve had him become a slowly disintegrating corpse, rather than having wounds that heal as if he were The Crow on a mission.

I just wanted to check whether the players are right, that (Hexes aside) he should display some sort of mutant healing ability rather than wake up still scarred (and still essentially dead), but animated and able to ignore the effects, healed in mechanically terms only? Or is it entirely the MC’s call?

  1. Yeah, as Tim Jensen said, this is on the player/group. If the Ghoul usually looks normal, then they’d probably come back looking fine. If the Ghoul usually looks like a corpse or is slowly rotting, then they probably will come back healed of Harm only.

  2. I think the player was originally interpreting the Ghoul as someone who miraculously came back from the dead, instead of as an animated corpse. But the Witches Hex (and the way the player chose to describe its effects) kinda put a spanner in the works.

No-one actually questioned this until the end of the last session, even though he died and came back at the beginning of the session… so it was a little late to backtrack and retcon. Still, it fits in with what backstory has been established over four sessions. Now, if he had necromantic caretakers, or someone used some major voodoo on him, it might be a different story. Alternatively, with a few advancements under his belt already, we’re maybe halfway towards the season’s end; he could simply change Skins.

  3. I see Ghouls not a a miraculous resurrection, but as the zombie archetype. If you’re smart enough to look close, you’d ALWAYS notice the horror of a skin.

  4. I had a Chosen in my game pick up NRFTW as her first advance (and promptly killed her) and in that case she always reappeared mysteriously and entirely unharmed. She eventually developed a kind of Jesus complex (worsening (bettering?) when she switched to Queen).

Point: it depends on the character.
