  1. Some unorganized thoughts:

There is a lot I love about Dark Age, the rights, the harm tracks, the staggering depth of content. After an hour of setup time we had a group of interesting characters, places, and peoples to work with.

Our playspace became a huge confusing mess of paper. I resorted to aggressive stapling and a filing system to keep track of everything.

When we got around to asking each other about last season, the answers referred to yet more peoples and places we hadn’t talked about yet. My impulse was to go ahead and start new sheets for those peoples but that also felt a bit overwhelming to the group after all the work we’d already done.

Co-MCing took a lot of energy. Mostly in navigating who would be in charge of what, who should MC when, who should make a hard move after a miss, what your offscreen plans were for such and such, etc…

We had a battle, Some of the attack options cancel out some of the defense options, but it took us awhile to untangle which canceled out which. We messed up and had to go back and retcon the fight slightly.

All the work we did earlier making up the peoples, setting and battle companies paid off. The battle felt weighty and meaningful. There was lots to talk about and I had a clear picture of what was going on in my mind’s eye.

We had a duel. Next time, I’ll use colored beads or something to select attack, defense, or position. We had some interesting narration before and after the battle, but it felt like there wasn’t much need to say anything between rounds. I felt no need to describe what was happening mechanically.

We’re going to give it a reboot with a single MC, and several sessions of play. There is a bunch of info to keep straight and I feel like I need the play materials to be more supportive, but maybe it will feel different to not have to juggle a character as well.

  2. Those things felt normal to us, though Olympia normal may be different than what you are used to. It was a bit challenging to navigate who should be talking about what, but I think we managed it ok.
