Not enough or too much carrot with this one?
When someone asks you for advice, tell them what you think they should do. They take a String on you and carry 1 forward if they follow your suggestion. When they complete their goal, roll with Dark. On a 7+, you reap the benefits of their actions instead of them, and on a 10+, you’re in a position that prevents immediate retaliation.
I like it, but it may be too grown-up a move for MH. This shows actual forethought.
Good point William Nichols. I (obviously) hadn’t considered that. Maybe it needs rewording. Just the 10+ result. Something that is more in line with you not planning things through.
Maybe so. And also not really having a good theory of other people’s minds — i feel like half the moves are setup in MH because you can’t really understand each other.
But, yeah, the 10+ definetly helps with that — you just put yourself out of harm’s way. You still need something to give the instigating player a reason to do it, something similar to the 7+.
Maybe, on a 7+ it backfires and your bad advice leads them astray?
I reworded this a bunch of times so that it would hopefully work for PCs and NPCs. The target taking a String on you and carrying 1 forward hopefully encourages other players to follow along, despite them possibly getting screwed in the end.
You’re right about moves in Monsterhearts often being about not understanding each other. But if the target follows your advice, you should know how to screw them over. The move represents you always furthering your own agenda, even when it seems like you aren’t.
Maybe it needs to be something like “on a 7+, you get the benefit instead of them, and on a 7-9, they give you a Condition”.
Maybe so!
