When you coerce someone through violence, roll.

When you coerce someone through violence, roll.

When you coerce someone through violence, roll. On a hit, you inflict harm. Furthermore, 10+, you choose 3; On a 7-9, choose 2:

-You inflict controlled harm, up to harm rolled

-They buckle, fall, or cower (their choice)

-They cry out, or don’t (your choice)

-They suffer -1 forward

The setting context is a brutal ancient world. The feeling I’m going for is that violence is a powerful motivator, but also horrible.

My questions are:

-Does this convey those feelings?

-Is the move effective enough?

-Is the move consequential enough?

-Is it too heavy for anyone to actually use?

  1. “You inflict controlled harm” actually sounds super safe. If I can just reduce the damage they will take it doesn’t sound horrible.

Is it also correct that this move also doesn’t make them do the thing you want them to? Its more like

    Do this!

    No!

I hit you! BAAM. Do it or I hit you again!

    right?

They cry out, or don’t (your choice)

doesn’t seem like a choice I would make

(unless I am like infiltrating somewhere and need to control them making noise but how often will that happen?)

  2. Did this with gunlugger. Picked up the move I think from quranteen that let you pick level of harm. Honestly it sort of boiled some of the energy and tension of the go Agro move. Things became too certain. Gave me too much narrative power.

  3. Rustin Simons, I get that. This move is specifically for coercion, not for a general melee type harm. The idea of the “controlled harm” thing is so the question of “does this harm get out of control” thing is on the table, but re: Tim Franzke, I think it does need to be re-worked.

    Hmmm… thinking thoughts…

  4. Okay, how about this:

When you cripple, butcher or slay a person of import, roll. On a 10+, choose 3. On a 7-9, choose 2:

-Someone present will beg for mercy

-Someone present will turn and run

-Someone present will lash out in anger

-Someone present will do as you demand

If another player is present and affected, they choose which reaction grips them. If they choose none, they suffer -1 ongoing for the remainder of the scene.

    Same context, same questions.

  5. If it’s a controlled non-combat situation, the the desired harm should be automatic.  I think something where you get holds over the target.

When you inflict harm, roll + hot.

    10+ hold 3

    7-9 hold 1

    Spend 1 for 1 to:

    – ? (maybe something off the read a person list? or the skinner manipulation list? )

If you want to fast-forward through torture (getting information, then best to have read a person) if you want to manipulate then something like the skinner move.

Though perhaps it would be two moves, sharp to read a person, hot to manipulate.  Which points to an entire playbook (the interrogator?)

The holds should be slightly more powerful than the basic moves.
