I have a question about the Bond Threshold in ongoing play that I couldn’t find had been asked here before.

What happens if a move tells you to take a new Bond with a character but you already have the maximum number of Bonds that your Bond Threshold allows? Does it simply not happen, or does your Threshold increase by 1 to accommodate the new bond?

  1. What I had in mind when I wrote it was that you couldn’t increase your Bond threshold without spending Achievement Points on it, and with it making sense in the fiction – so learning to control your powers, finding a place you belong, identifying with someone in particular.

Moves that tell you to up or take a new Bond assume that they can only go up to the Bond threshold, otherwise the Bond Threshold wouldn’t really mean anything. If it were me, I’d ask them if they wanted to spend any Achievement Points to push their Threshold up at that time since it’d be an opportune moment in the fiction. Those moves are more to replenish Bonds or spread them around to make them more dynamic.

I’ve actually allowed a player to up their threshold to get a Bond before a couple times though, mostly because I wanted them to have more diversity in their Bonds and enjoyed where I saw the story going with that, so I guess even I don’t follow the rule all the time!
