Spectre question: Without the “Wall? What Wall?” move, can Spectre’s move through walls? In my PbP a player recently mentioned that his Spectre “can’t yet walk through walls” but that seems like a strange arbitrary block. Still, it does seem to make the move a little weird if any Spectre can move through walls. Thanks!

Spectre question: Without the “Wall?
I would say that a Spectre can still move through walls without the move to some degree. But they don’t get the benefit of the move, so moving through walls is unlikely to be natural, quick or easy, and they can’t take other people with them, so they can’t transfer their insubstantiality to others.
As with most moves, you can reskin the move to suit the concept. So, the move could instead represent an ability to fade away or even delve deeper beyond a veil where only the dead can go, rather than just insubstantiality.
Exactly, arbitrary block, the same syndrome affecting my players.
If I read the move, it says that you can always make the Escape move, that is, you always meet the trigger condition.
It doesn’t speak of actual walls…
Luke Walker nailed it. The Spectre can still do all those ghostly things without the move, but they’re not as practised at it or can’t take others with them until they unlock it.
The move also makes a specific guarantee that the player always has an opening. Even if a character can walk through walls before taking the move, they don’t have that same guarantee. An NPC wizard might be able to trap them in a room, for example.
Don’t forget the Let it out move. You always can used taht to represent supernatural powers apporpiated to your character.
Have you played the “Murdered” video game? The one where you play a ghost solving his own murder?
You can’t walk through every wall in that game because in some cases the wall has a ghostly reality as well as a physical one.
In other cases there are places where a ghost wall exists that doesn’t exist for the living so you get to see living humans walking through walls.
Cool – this is basically what I figured. It being ‘hard’ to move through walls, and needing to let it out makes some sense as a way to get the opening they need as well. Thanks everyone!
