So…I don’t get the Protégé power breakdown? It might be the lack of book, or the lack of support heroes…..But the description of the power break down makes NO sense to me. Can someone enlighten me on how its supposed to work. I get everyone else.

Do you mean the moves? The labels? The abilities?
I think he’s referring to the abilities; shared, own, and mentor.
Yes the Abilities. How they are written looks to me like it is a bit of unfinished notes that got missed during the upload.
Especially with the detailed nature of how the other abitilty breakdowns are written.
I feel that I could use some guidance there too, they’re pretty vague.
My thoughts:
Choose a power from each category. One you alone have, one you share with your mentor, one your mentor has that you don’t.
I can understand the confusion, i think until a more comprehensive pdf is released with powers put into categories its up to you to decide what a niche power(etc) is. Just requires a little bit more creativity and probably a bit of back and forth with your gm. “What, omnipetence is totally niche!”
Ah yes. Thats rather what I figured. So thier will be a more detailed ability section in the full book?
Also is Luke correct in assuming its one from each section? Its not spelled out real well.
.
i definitely read it as one from each section.
The book won’t cover lists of special powers. I think the idea of the ability section is to focus on what is in common and what is different from the mentor. The use of powers is covered by the various moves as normal.
Luke – I follow what your saying but all the other powers are spelled out in great detail. The fact that this section isnt doesnt fit design mold
I think the reason is that the protege’s powers are constrained not by an archetype but by relation to the mentor (who can be any type of superhero, and is not themselves constrained to an archetype). So, it’s a relative constraint that comes from how the mentor is defined, which is what the protege is all about.
To give an example, Nightwing is pretty much Batman and is defined mostly through what Batman can do and in what ways they differ.
Riley Crowder all the other playbooks use a one or two words to describe their abilities. Psychic weapons, swords, gravity manipulation etc. I think it just leaves it to you to come up with something like that that fits the selections avialable
Its possible. It just seems out of place with the rest of the layout unless they are putting together a list with more breakdown.
I think the issue with select powers like other playbooks will be that it is like a double constraint suggesting only certain types of superheroes take on proteges. I am not sure the protege is limited to types of power in that way.
If you feel you are missing inspiration for Abilities just google it and use a list of powers.
I would assume that you circle one item from each line, but then maybe decide on the specifics by saying that the Ability is actually one of the other abilities from another playbook (heliokinesis, shapeshifting, etc.).
If you’re looking for various power inspirations, I wrote a book called Thrilling Powers for Worlds in Peril. It’s designed to help give a good framework for powers in WiP, but would work nicely for Masks’ Abilities. I’m currently working on updating it for Masks, which would mainly be statting up the NPCs moves from Masks’ playbooks and maybe some more notes on a few different powers.

Riley Crowder, thanks for bringing this up! Clarifying the Protege is going to be an important hurdle. Right now, the intent is that you circle one option from each category: one shared ability, one of your own, and one mentor ability. You and your mentor both have the shared ability, while you alone have “your own ability” and your mentor alone has the “mentor ability”. It’s left up to you to interpret the category as you choose at the moment. For the next draft, I’ll try something different for the abilities here, such as more specific abilities instead of general categories.
