  1. As for the second one: the Janus is all about the change they go through when they put on the mask, while locking a stat is all about realizing something important about who you are, something deep enough that other people can no longer change it.

So as a GM, if a Janus wanted to lock their Mundane, I’d want to have a talk with them about what’s going on in their character’s head the next time they put on that mask, how it’s different from last time, and possibly whether the Janus is the right playbook for them anymore

  2. I think mostly as Jeff Johnston has said, in that wearing/taking off the mask doesn’t mean as much anymore. So in that regard I would say any locking of Mundane should not happen until the Janus’ Moment of Truth when they go “what the hell” and show their face to the world and then go from there to decide how that will effect them.

  3. While these are all good points and thanks for responding, I mean more of what happens if you lock mundane, use your mask, and then someone changes your self-image of your mask stat before you change back. Super edge case, but it made me wonder.

  4. Nicholas Arroyo, that’s what I was trying to get at. One of the major principles of PBTA design and GMing is to respect the fiction, so when these edge cases come up, that is one of the things you should be looking at.

What does it mean in the fiction that the Janus has locked his Mundane?

Does he still swap his stats when he puts the mask on, and what does that mean? If he’s got a growing rift between his hero side and his secret identity, maybe his locks move when he dons the mask as the two personas continue to separate. If his Mundane remains locked where it is, maybe it should be treated a different way.
