Any ideas for city names? I’m looking to create an entirely fresh city for my Urban Shadows run; something completely different than anything in real life. If I use the name of a real city, I’ll be tempted to fall back on real world tropes for that city, and it’ll constrict my creativity.
To that end, any ideas? I’d like something that’s not too obvious (“Umberton, Blackvale”), but something that’s not completely disconnected from the genre (“Meadowbrooke, Jefferson Valley”) either.
I’m so hard to please. 😛
What sort of feel are you looking for? Enoch, Babylon or other biblical name might work for an Angel or Tainted tilted game. I used the name Rosebriar for a Fae themed game. Other ideas Watch Wood/Hill (Hunters/Wolf), Ravenstown, or perhaps pick a patron saint of something creepy or odd (like the recently dead) and use that.
You could also just turn the question to your players.
Use a real city.
It depends. Do you want city name to have a meaning and history behind it or just sound good?
For starters, you can take just any town name and use it, as there’s a chance no one in your gaming group heard of it before
You can use also name generator: http://www.mithrilandmages.com/utilities/CityNames.php
Or

Or figure one, that caries the themes of your game.
I like that generator idea. I think I’ll generate a few names and see if one sticks. 🙂 I’d like it to have a little history, but I’m confident I can come up with a basic history for just about any name that sounds good, haha. Thanks for the links!
Or use an old name from a city that used to exist, but doesn’t any longer….
Or use a known fictional city – Metropolis and Gotham City come to mind
Robert Slaughter I would use names as these to establish the mood of the game, if I can find appropriate one.
Gotham, Arkham, Mega City…
P.S. In very specific games. Not everyone can just roll with it.
New Amsterdamn?
I support choosing a city and making a new one. St. Argos is the first name that came to mind for no particular reason.
