There are no Hackers in my group, but I want my players to still use the Matrix in (a more limited way) in their game. I’m trying to c one up with a custom move that encapsulates hacker-request activities, but I’m drawing a blank so far.
Anybody else got ideas?
I’m sure users can also work with Matrix, albeit in more limited way – same as users in our world can use computers without being hackers. Other way of getting matrix support would be to hire a contract hacker
I’m not sure I understand exactly what you’re trying to do here. What do you imagine happening in the fiction that would trigger the move?
I believe more than a hacker request, threat hacker as many different things that resolves around players role. For a hitter, hacker is someone to protect, for a fixer he might be someone to manage. I always share responsibility of npcs to players shoulders if they can take it.
If there are no hackers in your group, I think that’s a signal your players are not that interested in hacker-style stuff. Before making a custom move, just ask them if that’s the case. If they are not interested in doing hacker-style stuff, so be it. Run the game your players are interested in playing.
Hamish Cameron I’m actually not certain, I’m thinking of a generic cyberspace move – maybe just reuse Act Under Pressure.
Chris Stone-Bush I think the thing is that nobody is interested in trying to learn a whole another set of rules to due hacking stuff, but I have a tech in the team, and he mentioned some interest in hacking people’s eyes (Ghost in the Shell style), they didn’t go with that plan ultimately, but I want to be ready if they do want to run a mission to relies upon digital trickery.
I (unfortunately) haven’t run The Sprawl yet HoTeck Kan, but I feel like that would be an MC Move. Probably “Tell them the requirements or consequences and ask”.
HoTeck Kan I would talk to your players and find out exactly what they want to do. If they want to have their characters enter a VR world but don’t want to engage with the existing mechanics, that’s one thing. If they just want a way to make Research more explicitly cyberpunk, that’s another.
In terms of the former, you could create a system where you use the same basic moves but substitute different stats when you’re in the Matrix. So roll Mix it Up with Mind, Act Under Pressure with Synth, etc.
How about this; as Hamish said above your characters will be using full neural virtual reality connection, and their cyber stats and moves are transformed version of the stats that they have in real life. You will only be changing background and fiction. I am planing something like that.
