I might have some starship combat tonight. Some of my players might be watching, so this could just be some elaborate April Fool…
In terms of handling ‘Threats’ (p.145). If the players open fire on a ship am I tracking the standard thee elements as threats or ‘Sections’. I’ll also be tracking any weapons as threats too.
If fire was focussed on the enemy ship and the Shields were neutralised and out of the action, then is it just a successful Open Fire to take out the Hull and destroy the enemy ship? How does the Class of the ship (especially the big ones) affect this?
Cheers,
Yep, if the characters ignore the weapons (and just eat the return fire) they can focus on taking out the shields, then attack the hull. It’s a very brute-force approach, unless they’ve got someone on point defense and someone else modulating their own shields.
Class 3 and especially Class 4 ships have multiple redundant sections. This means that there might be a fore and aft shield generator. Also, penetrating the hull of a larger ship doesn’t necessarily mean instant destruction (though a lot of people inside will likely be dead, and things will quickly get worse).
Remember that larger ships likely have bigger guns and considerably longer range. The characters will have to overcome being outgunned before they can even close in to attack the shields.
Thanks for the quick response Sean Gomes . I’ll apply the guidance (and might apply to dragons over at AiK…) .
But, you know, this post is partly about Fear and Awe. They are running in a Class 2 with one Point Defence battery… 😉
Haha, good luck causing significant damage with Point Defense guns. Point Defense are made to take out small, agile targets like fighters, missiles and ground targets.
[edit] I mean, it’s possible to duel another Class 2 with just Point Defense, but at best you’re plinking away at their shields and scarring their hull. Might take a while.
Sean Gomes very true. I’m embracing the notion that the fiction could take them anywhere, and not in my control. I look forward to seeing how they avoid this one… 🙂
