Somebody make this happen. Okay?
(For the record this is all John Harper’s and Paul Riddle’s work and not one piece of this is mine.

That looks sweet.
I was just thinking about this!
Yeah, I mean in all honesty 2.5 Colonial Marines version really only requires you to say “demons” instead of “aliens” and your sorta there.
Also good for Metroid, I would think.
Ryan Dunleavy ran the Regiment for me and John Harper for a number of sessions and the part that really sang for me was the tactical “dudes on a map” feeling. The various weapons and their firing ranges, gear management, the feeling of being in a gunfight.
I don’t really associate that with Metroid, but you totally could and it would be amazing! The rhythm of frantic firefight, lonesome and alien exploration, frantic firefight would totally work.
Hell for that matter, do Resident Evil.
I was thinking, like, Metroid Prime: Hunters and the new Federation Force, which are multiplayer. Or the mercs in Metroid Prime 3. Or a solo 1-on-1 game. But yes, agreed overall.
This is a fun idea. I think it needs to be very stripped down, though. The Regiment has way too much business going on for Doom Guy. I’ve been tinkering with the “World of Dungeons” version of The Regiment which is much simpler, so maybe I’ll use DOOM as the wrapper for that.
I was thinking of a simple shooter game all day. Basically Regiment/World of Dungeons/simple Apoc Engine game. Imma call it MOOD.
I’d like it to have very simple miniature rules too (cardboard squares); so you play on a straight up map with finite enemies. With the option of reinforcements, of course.
There may be some kind of poker card rules in there, or use of matchsticks, just to give it a cigars and bubblegum feel.
I actually ran a stripped down version of The Regiment that was mashed up with WoDu at one point as well.
Yes, The Regiment is about war, not just gunfights and DOOM in particular is very… shall we say… focused in that regard.
If you were going to do The Regiment, and not just FPS Simulator then you’d have to couch it in the context of an actual war on mars against hell, not just a one man war.
A wacky idea: You play the demons and corrupted troopers, desperately fighting against Doom Guy, who rips through your ranks as the big scary monster. 🙂
(Now I want a Geiger Counter playset for that, J. Walton )
That sounds more like Geiger Counter or Dread. But, as you say Mr. Harper: Yes! Do that!
Regarding a stripped down version I feel like you could use a Darkest Dungeon / Agon range strip to codify firing ranges? Maybe? Dunno if it would strip out that super tactical room by room feel.
So John Harper, the players could be Princes of Hell, each modelled after a sin, say, and you’d command your armies and set up obstacles all while Doomguy doesn’t give a shit? Sounds fun! The MC basically gets the moves: make their lives hell and ruin their shit spectacularly.
Dylan Green I’ve been tinkering with range/position-based moves. So you roll to orbit the firefight or to tangle in the swarm etc. Then the various arenas have specific effects, like acid hazards, or tight space (no orbiting allowed), etc.
Also, the stripped down version has no stats. A move might say, “If you have the shotgun, take + 1.” 🙂
Oh! Maybe the “be the demons” game could be about trying to aim Doomguy at the other players while you make your retreat!
Oh, see I’m not much for gun porn, but the tags and VOF and stuff just felt so good and crunchy but not too crunchy. I felt it really hit that mark of giving each weapon character without going overboard. Honestly, it worked in a way that no Street Samurai’s Locker or GURPS Modern Weapons ever could. I’d be sad to see that go.
Dylan Green Yeah, for your idea of the “War against the demons on Mars” you could keep pretty much all the Regiment stuff.
I was talking about my stripped down video game version.
The barbarian in dungeon world can be played as Doom Guy.
