I always thought of it a s Lovecraft-ian. As in “The_Colour_Out_of_Space”
Early American colonists were spelling the same way, but Daniel Webster decided to change things up for his dictionary and accepted the American variants. Oh, and for a time they were capitalizing nouns like the German practice, which is why you see an awful lot of capitals in the U.S. Constitution.
