Hey all, so I am wondering if anybody here has played an Apocalypse World game where there were zombies or a virus that could infect the PCs and if so, how did you treat that mechanically in the rules?

  1. One of my pcs was infected by a bite of a nasty maelstrom creature. Every time she will do a 6- on a roll linked to the maelstrom I will use it into my Mc’s move. Everytime she used the maelstrom the mark (dark weird veins) would grow more onto her body.

  2. I might consider something like the Corruption track from Urban Shadows; have a thing things that let PCs take “infection”. When they get 5 infection, they erase and take an infection move. Using those infection powers make them mark more infection. Eventually, the only infection move left is to become a zombie.

  3. I had a infection track with each level giving certain symptoms. Those who became infected rolled to resist the diseases progress each session, otherwise they would slide down the track. But I like William Nichols idea better.

  4. The AW book actually includes a sample front for the mud-fish parasite of Hatchet City. It contains custom moves for everything and two countdowns for effects on a character AND effects on a community.

  5. We just used custom moves for each stage, like, “When you inhale the spores, roll…” “When you start coughing up black gunk, roll…” “When your skin starts to feel like sticky tar….”
