I just started a new game and I’m finding I’m struggling a little to explain each of the basic moves and when they would get used. Is there any better run down of each of the basic moves?

  1. There’s a pretty good write up for Gaze into the Abyss: story-games.com – [Monsterhearts] Roll to gaze into the abyss!

The others are pretty self-explanatory but consider variant uses like for Gazing. Recently when confronted with a locked door I Lashed out Physically at it and on partial success gave a string to the host of the party inside due to the identifying hair and clothing scraps left behind. Hurting myself in the process would also have worked.

The exception is Hold Steady, which is most frequently used as a situational check. Most moves do good things (mostly) if you succeed, Hold Steady (mostly) just lets you act. If a PC wants to do something non-trivial and it doesn’t clearly fall under another move, consider making them Hold Steady to follow through, especially if any danger or weirdness is involved.
