Went to my local super-indie (AAW) for the second night of a tournament event they had. It was a fun time overall, but I was particularly struck by a very WWWRPG-feeling sequence of events:

Background: The AAW title picture right now revolves around Pentagon Jr and Sami Callihan – Pentagon won the belt from Sami a couple of months ago in one of the most legitimately shocking wins I’ve ever been present for, and since then Sami has been building a little stable of fellow miscontents and aiming to get it back. Sami has targeted Fenix and stolen at least one of his masks. (Pentagon and Fenix are brothers) – Pentagon beat Sami last night in a deathmatch to retain the belt, as well.

Tournament match: Rey Fenix vs. Mustafa Ali. Good lucha-style match (not just flips, like very lucha-resonant submission and counter sequences, etc) – but who runs in to interfere at the end but Sami Callihan, costing Fenix the win (and eliminating him from the tournament).

Callihan and Dave Crist (one of his stable) come in to beat up on Fenix, then Pentagon runs out to make the save (with a goddam huge metal post, btw). Ok ok, normal enough stuff. Callihan and Crist retreat, Pentagon takes the mic and cuts a promo in spanish (with much cursing), and then Fenix translates – a challenge, two brothers vs two “brothers”

Cool Cool. We’re not sure if that’s going to happen later tonight or on the next show, but seems like a fun match for sure.

After intermission, the ring announcer announces that they are going to have that tag match tonight, but it’s with special stipulations – whoever gets pinned has something to lose.

– If Dave Crist gets pinned, he leaves AAW forever

– If Sami Callihan gets pinned, he loses his hair

– If Fenix gets pinned, he loses his mask

– If Pentagon Jr gets pinned, he loses his championship

Oh shit! Of course, smarky smarks that we are, we start trying to figure out the end. Maybe this is a sendoff for Crist for some reason. Fenix definitely isn’t losing his mask over this, right? And they wouldn’t move the title in an un-announced tag match, obviously. Callihan could take it, it wouldn’t really change him much to shave his head. Seems like a safe bet that team bad guys are losing.

Well guess fucking what but Sami Goddam Callihan kicked Pentagon Jr twice in the dick and then hit him with his own package piledriver to regain the AAW Heavyweight Championship.

So to recap:

– Run-In builds heat

– Cut a Promo to make a match later

– some backstage Moves to add some stipulations (or Creative is following up on some stuff they have On Deck that hasn’t come up yet)

– after some real hot in-ring action, Sami Callihan with the Heel Move to win the match – and we’ll never know if that was what Creative had planned 🙂
