I while back I posted here regarding the use of Urban Shadows’s Faction rules in UW. The answers I got is that they were “too small” for a galaxy spanning space opera.
Well, I made advances in theory and practice.
I dropped the random factions altogether in lieu of Eclipse Phase’s reputation networks, under Urban Shadows added on rules. The interesting side affect is that we added a memetic depth to UW – Criminal, Ecologist, Corporate, etc… “tell me who you walk with and I’ll tell you who you are”.
The more I read, write, and narrate, the more I see that UW and Eclipse Phase complement each other nicely!
Can you explain what reputation networks are?
Eclipse Phase has always had a soft spot for me, despite never getting to play. I’m stoked that mechanical elements from there work well with UW , and I’d be super interested in hearing more!
In short, social networks (in the broadest possible sense) that unite people and factions around a common theme. There they exchange in a systematic exchange of favors and services, not necessarily regulated by money.

No doubt the original random factions are great fun. So much, I wanted them more present in the game. Hence, me trying out Urban Shadows’s Faction rules.
As soon as it hit the table, it was obvious that was the base for a reputation-based economy – exactly as in Eclipse Phase. Next step is to work with the reputation networks, either scenario based and determined by the GM, or based on the characters’ origins.
Man, I’d love to see how you use that in UW – just reading that page made me crosseyed at all the math 🙂
Btw, Fraser Simons’s The Veil also explores this reputation economy very well!
Aaron Griffin hahahaha, that’s why Eclipse Phase needs Uncharted Worlds for!
I also hate all that crunch, that’s why I am not a regular EP GM.
But the setting and the ideas… Man, they are good.
