Is John Harper’s Colonial Marines reskin of The Regiment (link: http://mightyatom.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/the-regiment-colonial-marines-25.html?m=1) a good choice for some XCOM fun? If not, why not? I’m basically lining up the moves for aliens as I type. Kinda thinking that doing XCOM 2 would be good fun, with the Avenger and a scrappy resistance against the aliens that took over the world.

Seems like a good option to me; though maybe the cyberpunk/alien invasion resistance hack of Blades in the Dark would hit the spot (whenever we see that)
I think Blades is deeply cool, but I’m a little out of touch with it. V8 is on the horizon and well, I’m kinda waiting for it to stop moving and release. Also, and stop me if I’m wrong, but it seems quite hard to say (in Blades) that death is on the line. That seems like an essential part of the XCOM experience.
Toby Sennett the Death Moves in the Regiment are perfect then!
Donogh McCarthy they’re in CM too as special moves.
I am reasonably certain that someone has already hacked the Regiment to do XCOM, because I found it when I was going to do the same thing. Maybe it was Matt Wilson?
I think John released something on his patreon for xcom, but more of an “influenced by” idea. I think actually that blades would be a great fit for it.
I had never heard of this hack before, and I’m so into it.
Toby Sennett re: “quite hard to say that death is on the line”
To the contrary: it is not hard to say death is on the line in Blades. As GM of that game, I find it much easier to inflict death than in other PbtA games because there is a resist mechanic. And as a player, I feel more games need the control that the Blades gives me with the resist mechanic and stress track/trauma system. If they agree they died, then they died. If not, go ahead and resist, Player, and let’s see if your character’s personality survives the strain
Jeff Johnston the X-com hack can be found in the barf forth apocalyptica forum here: apocalypse-world.com – The Regiment // Enemy Unknown
Also Paul Riddle is working on a updated version of the original Regiment. 😉
Vincent Quigley that’s true!
John Harper’s Colonial Marines is more along the lines of Aliens
I worked on an XCOM hack of The Regiment, but haven’t shared it around, really. I might release it on Patreon at some point. The base building needs a bit more work.
For base building, I would pinch the rules for Holdings and Workspaces from AW as a starting point, then discuss with the table how much we want that kind of thing to be involved in the game.
No Commander? It’s basically background. Have a Commander? You get wants and surplus start of session. Everyone is “senior officers”? You all get to pitch in and have your own bit to deal with.
