Based on a podcast I heard recently, I’m considering mirroring the PbtA concept of Harm as Established with Strings. That is, whenever you’ve demonstrated that you’ve got an emotional hold or power over someone, you get a String.

Thoughts?

  1. This works. It could get tricky between PCs though as Adam Goldberg notes. You’d probably have to do a table consensus sort of thing. “Do we all agree that Marcus now has a String on Leandra?”

It’s not to my tastes though, as I dislike having to judge such things when running a game. I like the taking of Strings tied to a mechanical result. Like when a player move says to, or as a MC move.

  2. This has not worked out in my game (everyone felt like Strings were vague and up to me as to when they happened). So, what I’ve done is merged 2e Move Descriptions with the 1e Moves, and added options about Strings back into those Moves. We tried it out last night and things seem to be running smooth again. I do eagerly await 2e rules, though, as I have a feeling that the MC Advice will lead me to how to run a 2e game.
