What combination of origin and careers would you use to simulate a Babylon 5 style technomage?

Any thoughts on how? I keep coming up with various combinations of Technocrat and other things.

  1. So that would depend if you believe that the Technomages are using a mixture of technology and influence (conning people into believing the mystical powers) or if they have actually tapped into reality warping through technology. The show is rather vague about it, and I get the impression that it falls somewhere in between (i.e. they have some power, but a lot of it is smoke-and-mirrors)

In either way, you’re likely to want to use the Far Beyond Humanity expansion character chapter (Chapter 4) to build this.

For the Influencer, I’d go Advanced Fanatic Consul. Leverage the Consul’s Advice, paired with the Fanatic’s Terrify. Add the Fanatic’s Obsession with technology to round it out. Cutting Edge or Surveillance from the Advanced Origin both fit the archetype’s modus operandi pretty well.

Reality Shaper would build similar, but I’d replace Consul with Arcane (note: the Arcane career will soon be renamed/re-branded as the “Shaper” career. Same powers, more adaptable/versatile frame). The “Evoke” skill is made for this kind of pyrotechnic/flashy character.

Beyond that, I’d invest in weapons and attire with the Stylish upgrade to further create the quasi-magical environmental effects, and maybe a custom-designed “Holographic” Kit, for the big showpieces.

  2. I like the option of having power but, not as much as they like to pretend they have, relying on deception and showmanship to make it more impressive.

Both options present some neat ideas and I’d have never thought of using Fanatic or Consul. Well, now I’ve got some nifty ideas. Thank you!
