So, I’m in the midst of a Masks campaign where I’m taking influence from things like Old Man Logan and Days of Future Past.
The campaign is likely to go on the move in road trip fashion. We’re looking to use things like The Quiet Year, Microscope and Kingdom to assist in world building outside of Halcyon city limits.
I’m curious if anyone else has broken the mold of what seems to be the traditional style of Masks game?
It’s funny. I had created a Bull character that was more dex-y martial artist fighter than brick, based on a couple of characters from previous games. It was only after seeing the movie trailers and reading up about X-23 that I realized I’d inadvertently made a very similar character. 🙂
I’d been pondering how feasible it would be to use the Masks set-up in variant settings, such as galactic teen superheroes in the future (the Legion) or a traditional sentai team (Go Go Power Rangers!)
I’m a firm believer in all things being possible with some creativity and willingness to be flexible by all parties. I haven’t yet run a RPG session that was totally 100% by the book and neither myself or my players would change a thing.
So the main thing you want in Masks is constant pressure from the adult world to tell the kids who they are. The big urban Halcyon City setting with its extremely long memory of supers-past bearing down on them at all times is one such pressure. If you’re going to do a road trip, be sure, be sure never to let them escape this pressure. Every place they go some adult is going to say “you’re our savior finally here at last” or “you’re a monster, get out of our quiet beach town, lebowski” and so on. Just take the relevant features of Halcyon City and write them as large as the universe.
