A question about Masks with kids… has anyone played this with pre-teens, like KIDS. I know PbtA games in general can work relatively well for many reasons, but just asking if anyone has experience running for kids and if it can work, or does too much get lost since this is about teenagers, and with the whole “damage” tracks and such. Is this game to high-brow for an 8 year old? Curious.

My gut feeling is that your average kid (and by that I mean pre-teen) is probably not mature enough to “get” the concept of the game.
But I’m willing to be pleasantly surprised. 🙂
Masks? Hell, no.
1of3 Hah! Maybe there just needs to be a version that targets that toddler angst.
It may be a bit structured. There are tons of great games targeting the 8-12 demo tho.
8-12 is about the age range where kids first start to realize that dark stuff doesn’t have to be actual scary stuff, so one factor besides overall maturity is that you are probably going to get a few grimdark concepts that the kids haven’t actually thought through.
On the bright side, if your players are in that phase then they’re going to buy in to the teen angst for all it’s worth. This can provide teachable moments for dealing with big emotions.
So I’d say that it’s all about how you handle it. What are their interests, and how can you follow those while also maybe teaching them a thing or two?
Well given Teen Titans (the original tv show) is essentially a Masks game, and that’s aimed for younger audience, you could do the same. There’s nothing explicit in the rules or playbook as far as I can remember. You could probably make the PCs younger, like 12 or 13, to make them more relatable to your players.
Chirag Asnani Yah, I think that’s where I was getting at. I like the system, but wasn’t sure if all the teen angsty stuff would just be a bit over the top for kids… or if the conditions would make sense for them.
