Hi, I have a question regarding distract, mislead or trick move: can it be used by players to lie to another player character? I have an idea that only debts are intended be the only way for a player to affect the other player decision making, but i may be wrong here. And if you can use this move in pc vs pc interaction, how would you do it?

  1. I wouldn’t use it on another PC. You leave it open for them to shirk what the dice say. If they choose “you avoid further entanglement” the opposing PC is still probably going to tangle with them over the issue.

  2. Aaron Griffin definitely has some good concerns… but we totally use it for PC vs. PC at our table all the time. If you’re lying to another PC, using mislead, distract, or trick can help set the stakes for the conflict.

Usually, I verify a few things:

    1) Is this lie/trick plausible? That’s pretty much up to the target of the move. If they aren’t going to buy the deception, then they don’t get to roll.

    2) Are both PCs cool with it? Since this has the potential to lead to the problems that Aaron is describing, I try to keep both PCs in mind.

    3) Is a roll interesting? If it’s a simple deception, you may not have enough uncertainty to really generate a roll. It may just be something the two PCs agree upon. But if there’s some uncertainty… I usually let it ride.

If it’s helpful, I can write up an example here. I just went and looked in the book, and I can’t believe that there isn’t already one in the book!

  3. Mark Diaz Truman another way to solve my issue is making all the choices end in “for now”.

Example: I had a PC roll to mislead, distract, or trick an NPC who was discussing stuff with two other PCs. He had planned to steal something and jet out of there. He then clarified “and I don’t want X and Y to know it was me”.

I think I ended up saying “I’m not exactly sure we can juggle that honestly forever, so how about if we just assume they don’t know it was you right now in this scene?”
