  1. two thoughts come to mind,

the first and most mundane would be to have the Monster me something posing as a local pastur or priest, declaring war on the latest and greatest kid obsession such as Fidget Spinners are the work of the devil. leading to horrific abuses or something.

BUT perhaps more interceding would be it introduce an actual cursed game, that is sweeping a town. all the kids are getting absorbed with it and the more they play the more they change and become possessed. this could lead to the hunters having to “go into the game” to face the monster. or face some sort of trixter who has introduced the game. ether way in this world the game “is actually ” what those misguided parents used to believe.

  2. Got ideas for a couple of approaches after reading this article.

First one involves a missing persons case where a small town kid has disappeared under mysterious circumstances. The culprits are a group of school mates led by the highschool’s art teacher. Turns out the teacher is a leader of a cult and has been indoctrinating students to do her bidding by running a very special game of Mazes & Monsters involving actual mind-controlling magic. The missing child is being held captive and the cult intends to sacrifice the child on a very special night with the intentions of raising an evil god.

Second idea involves the leader of the Parent Teacher Association who has rallied the parents together to thwart the satanic influence of of a new fantasy roleplaying that has recently taken off within the town. In reality, the PTA leader is actually possessed by an ancient demon who feeds on strife within the community. Maybe there’s some vessel-hopping and this demon is also occupying one of the children? Might make for a fun situation if the local school’s most popular student (head cheerleader, star athlete, etc) has also been possessed and has made it cool to play D&D. Either way, the demon is feeding off the turmoil and is escalating the conflict between the kids and parents with the end goal being bloodshed.

  3. Another way to flip it would be to have a new game craze sweeping the town, and people not playing the game are found dead. This leads to the town blaming the ones playing the game. In reality, the game contains ancient symbols/magic that is protecting the players, and the monster responsible for the deaths is secretly working to get the game banned so it can have free reign over the town.
